Texas Invitational: Katinka Hosszu Takes Run at NCAA Record; Kasey Carlson, Kevin Cordes Clock Stunning Times

AUSTIN, Texas, December 2. DURING the second night of swimming at the Texas Invitational, Katinka Hosszu put together a remarkable swim in the women's 400-yard IM.

Hosszu smashed the distance medley field with a sterling time of 3:58.86. That performance bettered her previous personal best of 3:59.75 from the 2011 NCAA Division I Championships, but came up short of Julia Smit's NCAA record of 3:58.23 set at the 2010 Pacific 10 Championships. The swim comes on the heels of Hosszu giving Smit's 200-yard IM record a scare on night one with a 1:52.71. That effort missed Smit's scorching record of 1:52.31 from 2010 as well. Stanford's Maya DiRado touched second tonight in 4:02.06, clearing the NCAA A cut, while USC's Stina Gardell finished third in 4:05.82.

USC's Kasey Carlson twice lowered her lifetime best of 58.75 in the women's 100-yard breaststroke with a career day in which she dropped a 58.69 in prelims and a 58.46 during the evening. The 58.46 jumped her from eighth all time to fourth. Only Tara Kirk (57.77), Jillian Tyler (58.22) and Jessica Hardy (58.41) have been faster. Wisconsin's Ashley Wanland (1:00.18) and Arizona's Ellyn Baumgardner (1:00.20) placed second and third this evening.

Arizona's Kevin Cordes made a huge splash in the men's 100 breast prelims with a stunning 51.76. That time pushed him to fourth in the all time rankings behind Damir Dugonjic (50.86), Mike Alexandrov (51.35) and Nolan Koon (51.63). Cordes, however, could not replicate the swim but still clocked a strong 52.04 to win the finale. Teammate Carl Mickelson joined him under the NCAA A cut with a second-place 52.74. Arizona's Kelley Wyman finished third in 53.56. Both Mickelson (52.62) and Wyman (52.86) had been faster in the morning.

Arizona's Austen Thompson topped the men's 400 IM with an A-cut 3:39.37, while teammate Sam Rowen finished second in 3:47.76. Texas' Austin Surhoff wound up third in 3:49.25. Texas's Karlee Bispo posted an NCAA A cut of her own with a winning 1:43.82 in the women's 200 free. Arizona's Alyssa Anderson (1:44.07) and Arizona's Monica Drake (1:45.46) placed second and third.

USC's Dimitri Colupaev turned in an NCAA A cut in the men's 200 free with a 1:33.49, while Texas' Dax Hill touched second in 1:34.30. Texas' Clay Youngquist posted a third-place 1:35.30. Arizona's Sarah Denninghoff clocked an NCAA A cut in the women's 100 back with a triumphant 52.19, while Lauren Smart placed second in 52.30. Texas' Lily Moldenhauer touched third in 52.79. Arizona's Mitchell Friedemann concluded individual swims for the evening with a 45.91 to win the men's 100 back in an NCAA A cut. Arizona's Cory Chitwood (45.94) and USC's Alex Lendrum (46.71) placed second and third.

In relay action, Arizona's Sarah Denninghoff, Ellyn Baumgardner, Aubrey Peacock and Margo Geer won the women's 200 medley relay in 1:37.01. Texas' Lily Moldenhauer, Laura Sogar, Ellen Lobb and Karlee Bispo took second in 1:37.53. USC's Joan Christel Simms, Kasey Carlson, Yumi So and Kate Shumway placed third in 1:37.69.

Arizona's Mitchell Friedemann, Kelley Wyman, Giles Smith and Nick Popov claimed the men's 200 medley relay in an NCAA A cut time of 1:24.34. USC's Nick Karpov, Dimitri Colupaev, Matt Voell and Vlad Morozov placed second in 1:25.83, while UNLV's Charlie Tapp, David Szele, Cody Roberts, and Steven Nelms took third in 1:26.16.

Stanford's Felicia Lee, Maya DiRado, Andie Taylor and Andi Murez claimed the women's 800 free relay in 7:02.76, while Texas' Neil Caskey, Dax Hill, Clay Youngquist and Kyle McNeilis earned the men's 800 free relay triumph in 6:22.94.
