PALO ALTO, California, August 6. COLORADO Stars' Missy Franklin crushed the final 50 meters of the women's 100 free to capture the title at the USA Swimming Long Course Nationals.

Franklin threw down a sterling time of 53.63 to move to fifth in the world with a 27.47 in the final 50 meters. That time would have earned her bronze in the event at the FINA World Long Course Championships last week. She moved ahead of Dana Vollmer (54.05) as the fastest American this year, and joined just seven other swimmers in the sub 54 second club this year.

SwimAtlanta's Amanda Weir grabbed second overall with a 54.14 to move into a 12th place tie in the rankings with Britta Steffen. Vollmer, meanwhile, picked up third-place honors in 54.27. Andrew O'Dorisio, a Make-a-Wish participant, walked out with Vollmer during the A final parade, and remained behind the blocks throughout the finale.

NBAC's Allison Schmitt (54.71), Colorado Stars' Kara Lynn Joyce (54.77), Athens Bulldog Megan Romano (54.80), LSU's Amanda Kendall (55.08), Tucson Ford's Margo Geer (55.10), T2's Erika Erndl (55.16) and AGUA's Lia Neal (55.77) comprised the rest of the championship heat.

Stanford's Kate Dwelley posted a 54.98 to win the B final in front of NBAC's Elizabeth Pelton (55.04), while Palo Alto's Madeline Schaefer touched out Stanford's Andrea Murez, 55.65 to 55.70, for the C final win.
