YMCA Long Course Nationals: West Shore Claims Two of Three YMCA National Records

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, July 30. WEST Shore YMCA had a remarkable evening as the squad claimed two out of the three YMCA national records set on the second day of the YMCA Long Course National Championships.

The day started off strong for West Shore as Leah Gingrich joined Haley Lips, 14, of Middle Tyger, under Lips' 2007 YMCA record of 1:02.37 in the women's 100 fly. Gingrich finished with the win, 1:00.49 to 1:01.19. Shannon Draves, 17, of Boyertown placed third in 1:02.77.

West Shore returned at the end of the night with a record-crushing performance in the women's 400 free relay. Lauren Schmittle, Claire Loht, Stephanie Kinsey and Gingrich clocked a swift 3:55.59. The swim eclipsed the 3:58.73 set by M.E. Lyons in 2001. Middle Tyger's Addie Carne, Lips, Annie Gillig and Molly Willingham also cleared the previous record with a second-place 3:57.30.

Middle Tyger also snagged a YMCA record with a 3:33.66 in the men's 400 freestyle relay. Greg Morgan, Lee Groseclose, Graham Kauffman and Chris Reinke beat the longstanding 1996 record of 3:34.54 set by Ann Arbor YMCA.

Stephanie Conklin of Blue Ash won the women's 200 breast in 2:36.68, while Caroline Fore, 16, of Middle Tyger placed second in 2:38.99. Amanda Rom of Blue Ash finished third in 2:39.30.

Lips continued a strong night with a triumph in the women's 200 free. She led a Middle Tyger 1-2 with a 2:05.30, joined by teammate Carne, 17, in 2:06.45. Emily Lloyd, 15, of Anne Arundel touched just behind in 2:06.48.

Alex Smit, 17, of Countryside used a strong front half of 25.99 to counter the 30.30 final 50 of Kevin Marsteller, 17, of West Shore, 56.69 to 56.95, in the men's 100 fly. Greg Daniele, 17, of Red Bank picked up third in 57.59.

Scott Marino of Fanwood Scotch touched out Austin Mizzell of Cheshire, 2:24.25 to 2:24.48, in the men's 200 breast, while Jared Kauffman, 15, of Middle Tyger finished third in 2:24.62.

Evan Reed of Upper Main Line cruised in the men's 200 free in 1:53.35, while Travis McNamara of Cheshire took second in 1:55.02. Jim Barbiere of Countryside rounded out the top three in 1:55.51.

Travis Green, 17, of Huntington won the men's 800 free in 8:27.55. Ty Perkins, 17, of South Family placed second in 8:33.44, while Alex Carr of Rock Hill touched thrid in 8:35.19.
