Diana Nyad Planning to Make Another Attempt at Swimming From Cuba to Florida

HAVANA, Cuba, September 23. SIX weeks ago, Diana Nyad failed in an attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida and subsequently announced she'd never try again. This morning, Nyad took back that statement, saying she's diving back into the Atlantic later today for another try.

Nyad, 62, told the media today in the Cuban capital "Don't listen to athletes when they say it's over," adding that the increasingly favorable water and weather conditions made another try to good to pass up today.

Nyad will swim about 103 miles from Havana to Florida, a trek that is expected to take 60 hours. This will be Nyad's third try in 33 years. Her first failed attempt occurred in 1978. Last month, Nyad ended her swim after complaining of shoulder pain and breathing problems as currents continued to push her off course.

If completed, Nyad would own the world record for the longest ocean swim without a shark cage.
