Poll of the Week: Top Swimming Story of 2013 (Results)

PHOENIX, Arizona, January 8. WE had our last poll on swimmingworld.com for two weeks through the holidays, and that produced a lot of responses to our question of which person was part of the biggest swimming-related headline of 2013. On the Week That Was that we brought you on swimmingworld.tv on Monday, we said that Michael Phelps’ possibility of coming out of retirement was the top headline of the year, but voters said that was the second-most popular of 2013. It was Diana Nyad’s swim from Cuba to Florida that voters picked with that story getting 46.75 percent of votes. Phelps’ potential comeback got 38.10 percent, so not that far behind. Rounding out the voting was Ryan Lochte’s knee injury, with 3.46 percent. And 11.69 percent of votes went to “other,” meaning those people believed another story was the top headline of the year.

Let’s look ahead to 2014 now, and our new poll question wants to know which major international meet you’re most excited for this year. Is it the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games, the European championships or the Pan Pacific championships? With no world championships or Olympics this year, these four meets will be the top opportunities to see the best in the world compete at a high level. Go to our home page at swimmingworld.com and select your choice. We’ll bring you the final results on next week’s show.
