Streamlined News: Headlines from Scotland to the USA; Brunelli Has a Girl

PHOENIX, Arizona, September 13. Happy Friday the Thirteenth! For superstitious folks, this day is notorious for bringing people bad luck. However, here at Swimming World, we’d like to start today’s news segment by reporting some very good luck that befell the US swimming family yesterday afternoon:

Former World Champion, American Record holder Nick Brunelli welcomed his first child into the world yesterday afternoon with wife Jenn Brunelli. Nick tweeted the happy news, saying:

“4:42pm on September 12 2013 Sloane Leighton Brunelli was introduced to the world! 5lbs 13oz and 19 inches! Jenn & Baby are doing great!”

This is very happy news, considering the Brunelli family experienced heartbreak in 2012, when Jenn and Nick had a late-term miscarriage of the twins they were expected. We wish the Brunellis all the best with new daughter Sloane!

Across the pond, the Scottish swimming awards are running this evening at the Glasgow Science Center. The ceremony, presented by Scottish Gas and hosted by former British swimmer Steve Parry, will include appearances from Great Britain’s 2008 and 2012 Olympian and European Champion Hannah Miley and 2012 Olympic silver medalist Michael Jamieson. Miley tweeted at picture of herself before the awards show, dressed to the tens in a plaid dress. The 400 IMer included the hashtags no wet hair, no goggle marks, just in case the swimming public is taken aback at her appearance outside of the pool deck.

Back in the United States, the United States Aquatic Sports (USAS) convention is still going on in Garden Grove, California, just outside of Disneyland. The convention includes delegates from all aquatic sports, including Synchronized Swimming, Water Polo and Diving. Some key points on the agenda include: voting on whether the House of Delegates will meet every other year and if there should be an appeal process if a club team is denied a sanction to host a swim meet.

We end our Streamlined News today with more international news: the swimming events began last night at the Japanese National Sports Festival in Tokyo. Although the event is not traditionally known as a particularly star-studded or record-breaking meet, Swimming World will keep you informed of the highlights from the event.
