Streamlined News: NCAA, Open Water News

PHOENIX, Arizona, August 20. THE NCAA has released the list of 30 student-athletes who are semifinalists for the prestigious Woman of the Year award, made up of the top senior student-athletes in the United States. Three swimmers are on that list, including California Lutheran’s Cortney Jordan, who has become the first Paralympian to make it into the Top 30. It’s been a great week for Jordan, after collecting three gold medals at the IPC world championships. The other swimmers on the list are Caitlin Brauer of the College of Saint Rose and Kayla Shull from Clarion University of Pennsylvania. The list of 30 will be whittled down to nine finalists next month, with the winner named on October 20.

Yesterday afternoon Trent Grimsey announced his retirement from competitive swimming after four years of making a name for himself in the open water swimming community. Grimsey gravitated to open water in 2008 after missing out on the Olympic team in the 1500, and found success quickly. He won medals at the world championships and was crowned FINA’s Grand Prix open water champion last year. But his lasting accomplishment will be crossing the English Channel in six hours and 55 minutes, faster than anyone has made it across the famed waterway. Grimsey is focusing his efforts on a program in Australia with his brother Codie that will teach open water swimming strategies. And we wish him all the best.
