Streamlined News: World Record Swim Lesson, Coach Gets Suspension

PHOENIX, Arizona, June 18. IMAGINE 34,000 people around the world jumping into swimming pools for a common cause — well, two common causes, I suppose. Today was the annual World's Largest Swimming Lesson, and it's reported that about 34,000 kids in 15 countries participated in swimming lessons at 11 am Eastern time today. That would break the Guinness world record for the most participants in the world's largest swimming lesson, which stood at a little shy of 25,000 from last year's event. Olympians took part in today's event, including Janet Evans, Brendan Hansen and Misty Hyman. The event is part of Water Safety Month around the world.

USA Swimming announced today that Bill Jewell was given a three-year ban following an investigation into claims that he acted inappropriately around underage swimmers while he coached at Fullerton Aquatics Swim Team and Golden West Swim Club. Jewell's actions did not include inappropriate touching of a sexual nature, which is likely why he was not handed a lifetime ban.
