Streamlined News: Recapping Top Stories of 2012, Nos. 4-6

PHOENIX, Arizona, December 27. ON today's show we're continuing our countdown of the top 10 aquatic sports headlines of 2012, based on the top articles viewed on swimmingworld.com since January 1. Yesterday we brought you numbers seven, eight, nine and 10 on our list and we continue today with numbers four, five and six.

At number six was the sad news of the passing of Olympic diver Mark Lenzi on April 9. Lenzi was only 43 when he died from issues related to low blood pressure and is most well-known for his two medals from the Olympics against all odds, winning gold over the Chinese on the three-meter in 1992 and bronze in 1996 despite an injured shoulder. After his diving career, Lenzi was head diving coach at East Carolina University.

Our number five headline of 2012 was the meteoric rise of Ruta Meilutyte at the London Olympics in the 100 breaststroke. Our recaps of the prelims, semifinals and finals of the 100 breast garnered thousands of views in just two days, and sparked much talk of the beginning of a long career for the 15-year-old, who dropped about two seconds from her lifetime best to beat favorite Rebecca Soni for gold.

At number four was the news of the sudden passing of Norway's Alexander Dale Oen in Flagstaff, Arizona, from cardiac arrest. Dale Oen had been training with the Norwegian team in Flagstaff when his body was found in the shower at his hotel on April 30. Though he died at only 26 years old, he left behind a legacy that permeated his rivals, some of whom paid tribute to him after their swims in London.
