Performance of the Week: Dec. 26, 2012

PHOENIX, Arizona, December 26. JUST when we thought swimming pools would be relatively quiet here in the United States, we discovered a swim by a Division II NCAA swimmer last week that deserves recognition.

At the Incarnate Word Invitational last week, Tamiris Nascimento broke the NCAA Division II record in the 100 free with a 49.24 on a leadoff leg in the 400 free relay. She broke the seven-year-old national record of 49.33 set by Loni Burton and has instantly become a clear favorite in the sprint freestyles.

Nascimento placed second in the 100 free at the 2012 NCAA championships, and is giving the University of the Incarnate Word's women's team a big boost for their final season as a Division II institution. Congratulations Tamiris, you've won our Performance of the Week.
