Performance of the Week: Dec. 11, 2012

PHOENIX, Arizona, December 11. LAST weekend at the Tom Dolan Invitational and junior nationals, we saw many great performances from the future stars of USA Swimming. So many great swims meant making our pick for Performance of the Week one of the toughest we've had to make at Swimming World.

It's rare when we give our Performance of the Week to two people, but we're doing it this week. Reece Whitley and Allie Szekely had mind-blowing swims at the Tom Dolan Invite in the breaststroke events, breaking national age group records and barriers along the way. Whitley, a 6-4 12-year-old representing Penn Charter Aquatic Club, swam a 2:09.40 in the 200 breast and 59.90 in the 100 breast, becoming the youngest swimmer under 2:10 and 1:00 in those events.

Szekely of Central Bucks capped off an incredible year that included the Olympic Trials and junior nationals with a blazing fast 2:10.22 in the 200 breast. The 14-year-old's time would have placed 16th at the NCAA championships, not bad for only a couple of months of serious swim training right after participating in cross country.

Whitley and Szekely represent the future of USA Swimming and we'll definitely be keeping our eyes on them in 2013 and beyond. Congratulations to Reece and Allie, you've won our Performance of the Week!
