Poll of the Week: Who Should Win the Golden Goggle Award for Female Race of the Year?

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 19. USA Swimming's Golden Goggle Awards are four weeks away, and we're going to devote the next four Poll of the Week segments to getting your thoughts on who should get four of the top awards.

We'll start this week with the category of Female Race of the Year, and USA Swimming has five nominees in this category: Missy Franklin's 200 back, Katie Ledecky's 800 free, Allison Schmitt's 200 free, Rebecca Soni's 200 breast or Dana Vollmer's 100 fly. Go to swimmingworldmagazine.com/poll to vote, then head over to usaswimming.org to vote for your favorites to win at the Golden Goggles. We'll give you the results of this particular poll next Friday, though the actual winners of the Golden Goggles won't be announced until November 19.

The Centers for Disease Control released a document recently that recommended a new minimum pool depth for executing racing starts. While the recommendation of 6 feet 7 inches is not meant to be a nationwide mandate, it did create an uproar in the swimming community over fears that existing pools that are shallower would become obsolete, as well as questions over the conclusion that 6 feet 7 inches is the ideal depth. In our recent poll, 57 percent said the CDC's recommendation was too deep, while 40 percent said it was just right. 3 percent said it was not deep enough. The CDC is expected to release the final version of the Model Aquatic Health Code soon, which will become a blueprint for possible legislation at the state level.
