Streamlined News: Day 2 Juniors Highlights; 1976 Olympic Medals to Be Replaced; Dwyer and Bootsma Throw Pitches

PHOENIX, Arizona, August 15. ALLIE Szekely is becoming one of the top swimmers of the junior nationals, winning her second event of the meet last night. The 14-year-old won the 400 IM Tuesday in a personal best of 4:46.73, taking control as expected in the breaststroke leg. She came back later in the session to place seventh in the 200 back with another personal best of 2:16.17. Quinn Carrozza, just 15 year old, won that 200 back in an impressive 2:11.92.

North Baltimore went 1-2 in the women's 100 free in Indianapolis, with Cierra Runge taking the win in 55.64 over distance standout Gillian Ryan. And Santo Condorelli won a very close men's 100 free final with a 50.92 over his Bolles teammate 50.96. Just three tenths of a second separated first through seventh.

Today's prelims featured the 400 free and 100 fly. We expect Ryan to be the star of the women's distance race, and also look for a great battle in the men's 400 free, with four swimmers under the four-minute barrier in prelims today. We'll have complete recaps for you on swimmingworld.com.

Two years after her home was robbed and her three Olympic gold medals stolen, 1976 Olympic champion Melissa Belote Ripley learned Monday evening that a friend was working to get them replaced. Belote Ripley's medals in the 100 and 200 backstroke and 400 medley relay will be recast and presented to her in March. Just as an FYI, replacing Olympic medals isn't cheap. The estimated cost to replace these three is $2,000.

A couple of swimmers are switching over to baseball for just one day, as Conor Dwyer and Rachel Bootsma have been invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch in their hometowns. Dwyer did his duty last night at a Chicago Cubs game, and Bootsma will take to the mound at a Minnesota Twins game tonight.
