Streamlined News: Competition Preview; Swimming New Zealand Review

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 18. LET'S start today's show with a quick rundown of some of this weekend's competitions. California will be wrapping up its high school swimming championship season with more sectional finals. The big meet to watch will be the North Coast meet, featuring former national high school record holder Chelsea Chenault and backstroker Madison White, both of whom will be competing for Carondelet. The school won Swimming World's girls' team title in 2010, but we are not likely to see extremely fast performances from Chenault or White, who are preparing for the Olympic Trials. Preliminary competition started earlier today and finals will be held tomorrow.

Texas has moved up the dates of its Senior Circuit meets because of Olympic Trials, and as she has done for the past few years, Dara Torres will be competing in this weekend's meet in College Station. She's only doing the 50 freestyle in what is likely to be her final tuneup for Trials. A few of Texas' collegiate swimmers will be there, including recent NCAA champions Jimmy Feigen and Dax Hill, as well as All-Americans Karlee Bispo and Laura Sogar. Camille Adams, who is ranked second in the US in the 200 fly and 400 IM, will be racing those events this weekend for Texas A&M, as will new American record holder Breeja Larson.

Swimming New Zealand is under scrutiny today as it learns the results of an independent review that suggests a complete overhaul of the organization that includes the firing of the board of directors and president Mike Byrne. This is the second review of Swimming New Zealand to be released in two years. The first resulted in the sudden retirement of butterflyer Moss Burmester after he complained of disorganization and a loss of commitment the organization showed to athletes. Chris Moller, the chair of the committee that conducted the review, said the timing of the release was “unfortunate” in relation to the start of the Olympics, but a necessary one. Members of the organization will be offering their feedback on the review this month, with a general meeting to determine the official stance scheduled for July.
