MORGAN HILL, California, March 29. JEFF Commings reports on the day's headlines from the site of the 2012 Far Western championships.

The Canadian Olympic Trials featured a sub-1:00 100 backstroke and a few swims that were oh-so-close to the FINA A standard. Also, the New Zealand Olympic Trials featured a blazing fast 200 backstroke from Gareth Kean and a distance freestyle sweep by former UC-Berkeley swimmer Lauren Boyle.

Back here in the States, Alabama coach Eric McIlquham is stepping down after nine seasons in Tuscaloosa.
