High School State Championships: Louisiana Division 1

SULPHUR, Louisiana, November 24. Two state records and five division records fell during the Louisiana Division 1 High School Swimming Championships November 22-23 in Sulphur.

Colin Bone, a sophomore at Catholic High School, lowered both the state and division marks in the 200 yard free. His 1:38.58 erased the prior state record of 1:39.31 by Phillip Morrison from 2003 and the division standard of 1:41.43 set by Nathan Stibrich in 2001. Bone also took down a long-standing division record in the 500 free. His 4:35.58 took down the 4:36.51 set by Joseph Veiron in 2003.

Bone earned a second state record as he led off Catholic’s 400 free relay with senior Nick Seagraves, freshman Lance Rodriguez and junior Brady Grenfell. The quartet bettered the existing state and division records by 1-tenth, from 3:09.32 (set by Jesuit’s 2000 team) to 3:09.22.

Two division records fell on the girls side. Junior Megan Loop claimed her second straight 500 free victory with her 4:57.35, taking down Micah Martindale’s 2005 time of 4:59.10. In the 200 free, Loop outtouched St. Joseph senior Katlyn Rodriguez 1:52.68 to 1:52.72.

St. Joseph’s Academy’s 400 free record of junior Caroline Beene, senior Katelyn Rodriguez, junior M.C. Beaver and senior Victoria Padial joined forces for a 3:32.04, betting the division record the team set last year of 3:32.81.

St. Joseph dominated the girls races, scoring 558 points for their third straight title. Beene, sophomore Amy Miller plus seniors Mary Katherine Miller and Lindsay Hagmann combined for a winning 1:49.45 in the 200 medley relay; sophomore Clayton Black came on board with Hagmann, Padial and Beaver for a winning 1:38.51 in the 200 free relay.

Beene was a two-event champion with her wins in the 50 free (24.05) and the 100 free (52.21), just ahead of Mandeville junior Lia Joslin (52.35). Padial earned a victory in the 100 back in 58.69. She had placed second in the event last year.

Mandeville’s Joslin picked up a victory in the 200 IM (2:06.64); teammate Denise Frantz, a sophomore, placed first in the 100 breast with her 1:06.02.

The only non-St. Joseph’s or Mandeville girl to finish first in an event was Lafayette’s Ashleyn Hunt, who completed the 100 fly in 57.39.

Finishing behind St. Joseph’s was Mandeville in second (276), Northshore third (204), Dominican fourth (1850 and Mount Carmel Academy fifth (155).

The Catholic boys squad collected their first title since 2011 (they finished second last year) with 463.5 points. Besides Bone’s individual victories and their 400 free relay triumph, the Bears gained first-place points in all three relays. The quartet of seniors Nick Seagraves, Matthew Frederic, Jackson Forbes and Graham Gardner completed the 200 medley relay in 1:36.60; Gardner, Grenfell, Forbes and Bone put together a 1:25.98 in the 200 free relay.

Jesuit followed in second place with 301 points. Archbishop Rummel finished in third with 155 points, just ahead of St. Paul’s School’s 150.5. By a single point, Fontainbleau claimed fifth over Mandeville, 136-135.

Three swimmers successfully defended their championship wins from last year. Lafayette senior Nathan Borel took the 100 back in 51.63; Barbie junior Zach Stump posted a 56.66 in the 100 breast; Andrew Knudsen, a Fontainbleau senior, picked up the 200 IM title with his 1:53.03.

Archbishop Rummel’s Tyler Massimini closed out his high school career by finishing first in the 50 and 100 free (21.38 and 47.48). He had finished in second in both events last year.

Griffin Guzman, a sophomore at St. Paul’s School, touched out East Ascension senior Mason Hutchinson for first in the 100 fly, 51.08 to 51.18. Hutchinson will be headed to Gardner-Webb next year.
