High School State Championships: Michigan Girls Division 2

YPSILANTI, Michigan, November 23. HOLLAND High School’s girls team earned its third straight championship at the Michigan Girls Division 2 Swimming and Diving Championships November 22-23 at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. The Dutch combined for 287 points, ahead of two teams of Mustangs–Portage Central (235) and Marian (190). The Groves Falcons came in fourth with 176 points, followed by the Adams Highlanders (143).

Holland was paced by junior Taylor Garcia, who lowered the division record she set in 2011 (54.39) with this year’s 54.01. She also repeated as champion of the 100 back with her 52.95.

Garcia also swam on both of the winning Dutch relays. She led off the 200 medley relay (1:46.24) of sophomore Anna Giesler, senior Abi Johns and sophomore Clara Steeby. Garcia ended the meet swimming the anchor leg of the 400 free relay of seniors Holly Morren, Cassie Masiewicz and Emily Johns (3:27.79).

Morren, runner-up in the 50 free last year, claimed first this year in 23.59–just 3-hundredths back of Groves senior Hanna Pfershy (23.62), who had been fourth in 2012.

Just 4-hundredths separated first from second in the 500 free. Krissy Harmon, a junior at Bay City Western, squeaked by defending champion Masiewicz, 4:59.42 to 4:59.46. And a total of 14-hundredths separated first from third in the 100 breast, with Lakeview senior Brooke Rose coming out on top (1:04.53) over freshmen Allie Russell from Seaholm (1:04.64) and Adams’ Nicole Pap (1:04.67).

Marian junior Mollie Pulte also was a double-event champion. She lowered the division record in the 100 free to 49.87, taking out Emily Bos’ 2009 time of 49.96. She placed first in the 200 free for the second consecutive championship, posting a 1:48.37. Pulte anchored Marian’s division record-setting 200 free relay with sophomore Maren Taylor, junior Hannah Richard and freshman Sophia Schott (1:35.24). Mercy had held the previous record of 1:35.32 since 2010.

Portage Central junior Madison Umberger captured the 200 IM in 2:03.79, and Ali Shereda, a senior at Fraser, earned the diving title with 412.10 points, just ahead of Molly Miller, a Harrison senior (407.45).
