High School State Championships: Louisiana Division 4

SULPHUR, Louisiana, November 21. JARED Williams, a junior at Newman, set the only record at the Louisiana Division 4 Swimming Championships November 20-21 at the Sulphur Aquatic Center. Williams erased Christian Riess’ Division 4 mark from 2008 of 50.50 with his 50.10.

Williams also captured the 100 breast in 1:00.19 and helped two of Newman’s three winning relays to first-place finishes. He joined seniors Tarik Anwar, Foppe Koper and Harry Browne to a winning 1:43.91 in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Marc Matvienko joined Anwar, Browne and Williams to capture the 400 free relay in 3:30.60. Matvienko, seniors Drew Balkin and Robyn Krieger, plus Koper combined in the 200 free relay (1:40.26).

Browne earned his fourth straight victory in the 500 free with this year’s effort of 4:50.49, and placed first in the 200 free for the second time (1:48.55). Donovan Bendana, a sophomore at Newman, took home top honors in the 200 IM via his 2:14.08.

Those swims earned the Newman Greenies first place in the boys championship for the fourth consecutive year, scoring 391 points. Episcopal was second (301), followed by St. Martin’s (170), Dunham (159.5) and Runnels (144).

Dunham’s Kirkland Mawae became a double-event champion this year with his 50.55 in the 100 free and 54.63 in the 100 back. Episcopal’s Paul Ahluwalia, a junior, posted a winning 23.83 in the 50 free.

Episcopal dominated the girls races, earning first place with 434.5 points. Ascension grabbed second with 238.5 points, followed closely by Newman’s 221. Westminster Christian came in fourth (150), with Dunham fifth (121).

Episcopal freshman Chanler Turnley earned individual titles in both the 100 free (55.39) and 100 breast (1:09.09). She also swam on the winning 200 medley relay (1:59.14) with classmates Alyssa Kelliher and Mary Oliver, plus junior Caroline Sides. Turnley led off the 400 free relay (3:49.16) of sophomore Dru Powell, Sides and freshman Bailey Stevens. The Episcopal girls swept the relays as the Newman boys did, with the 200 free squad of freshman Camille Petty, Oliver, Powell and Stevens coming together for a winning 1:57.51.

Victoria Barczyk, an Ascension junior, finished in first for the third time in both the 200 free (1:55.06) and 500 free (5:09.82). Dunham’s Olivia Huffman also was a double-event champ with her 24.68 in the 50 free and 1:00.74 in the 100 back.

Eighth-grader Brianna Serret from Holy Savior Menard came from behind to defeat East Hoerville senior Claudia Aspey in the 100 fly, 1:03.00 to 1:03.18. Barczyk’s teammate, senior Alexandra Thurman, took home the first-place award with her 2:17.89 in the 200 IM.
