High School State Championships: Wisconsin Girls Division 1

MADISON, Wisconsin, November 19. FOR the past four years, Arrowhead and Waukesha South have battled for the top two spots at the Wisconsin Division 1 Swimming and Diving Championships.

In 2009, the Arrowhead Hawks defeated the Waukesha South Blackshirts 260-204.5. The last three titles have gone to the Blackshirts–but not by much. The margin of victory this year was just four points (337-333). In 2011, just two points separated the two squads (293-291) and last year, the margin was six (279-273).

Behind the two powerhouse schools were Middleton (third, 176), Verona Area (fourth, 162) and Appleton North (fifth, 148). A total of five state records–four individual and one relay–were set at the meet, held Nov. 15-16 in Madison.

Waukesha South was led by two seniors who will continue their swimming careers together next year at Purdue University. Abby Jagdfeld collected her second straight 100 free title, posting a 49.86. She was just 9-hundredths off the state record of 49.77 set by Cortnee Adams in 1998. Jagdfeld did clear the 200 free record of 1:47.67 she set last year of 1:47.67 with this year’s 1:46.80–but had to settle for second behind Cedarburg sophomore Katie Drabot, who set the new standard via her winning 1:46.08.

In the very next event, the 200 IM, Drabot lowered Aja Van Hout’s 2009 state record of 2:00.06 from 2009 to 1:59.89. This was Drabot’s second victory in the event, having won last year with her 2:00.23.

Jadgfeld’s present and future teammate, Kaersten Mertz, defended her title in the 500 free, clocking 4:49.22. The duo combined with junior Molly Manchon and sophomore Kierston Farley-Sepe to set a state record 3:22.50 in the 400 free relay. Madison East’s 2008 team set the prior mark at 3:24.80.

Arrowhead senior Mary Warren returned to the top of the podium stand in the 50 free with her victory in 23.29. She had won in 2011 with a 23.37. Teammate Lindsay Adamski, a junior, secured her second straight first-place time in the 100 breast with her 1:01.95. Adamski joined classmates Alyssa Lewandowski and Maddie Barta, plus sophomore Megan Doty, to collect the school’s fifth straight 200 medley relay title with their 1:44.23.

Beata Nelson, a sophomore at Verona Area, earned two state records with her 53.19 in the 100 back (bettering her mark from last year of 53.73) and 52.06 in the 100 fly (taking out Sarah Wanezek’s time of 54.55 from 1999). Her 52.06 also knocked out Janet Hu’s 15-16 NAG mark of 52.40 set last year. Nelson anchored Verona Area’s first-ever Division 1 victory in the 200 free relay with freshmen Maizie Seidl and Kristi Larsen plus junior Shelby Rozeboom (1:33.70).

Neenah junior Hazel Hertting succeeded her sister Greysen as diving champion with her combined score of 463.10 points.
