National High School Record Holder Joe Schooling Set To Be a Texas Longhorn

JACKSONVILLE, Florida, October 23. THE Texas Longhorns got the call this morning that Olympian and national high school record holder Joe Schooling will be moving to Austin next fall.

Schooling is one of the year’s top high school recruits, and his choice has been anticipated since breaking the overall national high school record in the 100 butterfly last November at the Florida state championships with a 46.50. Schooling has improved on that time, posting a 46.20 at a high school invitational last month that now stands as the national independent high school record. (Caeleb Dressel set the overall national high school record in the same race with a 45.89.)

Schooling is not only proficient in the 100 fly, but he has plenty of ability in the 200 IM and 200 fly. He began to make a name for himself on the international stage in the 200 fly last year, posting a 1:59.28 at the Olympics for 26th place while representing Singapore. This year, he competed at the world championships in Barcelona, breaking two minutes in the 200 IM with a 1:59.99 before finishing 16th overall with a 2:00.49. He made steady improvements in the 200 fly, placing 10th at worlds with a 1:56.27.

Schooling will also provide some needed breaststroke help for Texas, as he was part of the Bolles School record-breaking medley relay, splitting 25.48. Schooling’s addition to the Texas roster pumps up head coach Eddie Reese’s butterfly strengths, which currently includes Jack Conger in the sprint distance.

“I felt like it was the best fit for me,” Schooling told Swimming World today. “All the schools I’ve visited had great guys and programs but Texas stood out to me the most.”

Schooling said he also took recruiting trips to California-Berkeley, Michigan and Florida.
