SOUTHLAKE, Texas, October 17. TEXAS head coach Eddie Reese certainly picked up the top Texas swimmers in the Class of 2014, and he didn’t have to go far to do it as both of them came from the North Texas Nadadores. Shortly after Brett Ringgold made the call to head to Austin, teammate Jon Roberts elected to be a future Longhorn as well.

Roberts, who is the fourth-ranked recruit in the class by CollegeSwimming.com, is a huge get for Reese with middle to distance range throughout freestyle and the IMs. He also can throw down a sterling backstroke when called for as well.

In fact, Roberts’ best rated swim is a 1:44.46 in the 200-yard back at the 2013 Speedo Sectionals in February, where he also smoked the 1000-yard free (8:56.61) and 400-yard IM (3:48.46) as he enjoyed a remarkable career-best meet.

He followed that up with a stellar long course summer, concluding with a sizzling outing at the 2013 Speedo Junior Nationals. He clocked a 3:53.50 in the 400-meter free, a 15:24.82 in the 1500-meter free and a 4:23.08 in the 400-meter IM this summer as he certainly earned his scholarship offer from the legendary Texas head coach.

Along with Ringgold, that gives Reese the top two swimmers in the state as well as No. 4 and No 19 in the Class of 2014. While Reese had a bit of a hiccup last year in not keeping homegrown talent in Texas, that’s likely because he focused on the big score of the Class of 2013 when he signed top-ranked recruit, and likely future NCAA champion, Jack Conger.

SwimmingWorld.TV spoke with Roberts shortly after he won the Winter Junior National title with a 4:21.33 500-yard free last December in Knoxville.
