Countryside YMCA’s Emily Slabe Picks North Carolina

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio, October 8. ONE of the more dynamic backstroke threats in the Class of 2014, Countryside YMCA’s Emily Slabe, has decided to attend North Carolina following her senior year at Ursuline Academy.

Slabe, who is ranked 42nd in the Class of 2014 by CollegeSwimming.com, presents some serious speed in the backstroke events.

Slabe had a sizzling 2013 Ohio High School State Championship meet in February with a scorching 24.92 50-yard back leadoff as well as a 53.74 in the 100-yard back. That type of speed, especially in the 50 back, will do wonders for the North Carolina sprint medley relay. Her performances at the high school meet helped Ursuline to its sixth swimming title, and first since 2002.

Slabe also has some depth in terms of her events. She owns a 1:56.69 in the 200-ayrd back from the 2012 YMCA Short Course Nationals, as well as a 2:00.69 in the 200-yard fly from the 2011 YMCA Short Course Nationals.

In the long course format, Slabe has put up some strong times as well. She holds a 29.86 50-meter back leadoff from the 2013 YMCA Long Course Nationals as well as a 1:03.40 in the 100-meter back from that same meet as well. She also boasts a 2:16.35 in the 200-meter back from a year ago at the 2012 Speedo Junior Nationals.

Slabe joins No. 38 Caroline Baldwin as top-50 swimmers committed to be future Tar Heels in the girls Class of 2014.
