Big Night For Stanford Recruiting; No. 25 Liam Egan, No. 31 Wes Olmsted Join No. 5 Curtis Ogren

STANFORD, California, October 7. IT was a big night for Stanford head coach Ted Knapp and the Cardinal as two more strong swimmers committed to the Class of 2014 following No. 5 Curtis Ogren’s big commitment.

Crimson Aquatics’ Liam Egan, who is ranked 25th in the Class of 2014 by CollegeSwimming.com, is a distance freestyle talent who is versatile enough to swim up and down the freestyle spectrum from the 200s to the 1650s.

Egan’s top time is a 9:04.08 in the 1000-yard freestyle from the 2012 NCSA Junior National Championships, while he also has a 15:12.84 to his credit in the 1650-yard freestyle from the 2012 Speedo Winter Nationals. Egan, the second-ranked swimmer out of Massachusetts, also has a 4:24.33 on his resume in the 500-yard free and will also provide Stanford some depth in the 800 free relay with a 1:38.61 in the 200-yard free.

Egan also has some long course meter ability, sporting a 3:54.63 in the 400-meter freestyle from this summer’s junior nationals. He also boasts an 8:08.52 in the 800-meter free and a 15:33.79 in the 1500-meter free. His metric mile occurred against the big boys at the 2013 U.S. Nationals this summer. Egan also clocked a 1:51.31 in the 200-meter free at that meet.

High Tide’s Wes Olmsted, who is ranked 31st in the Class of 2014 by CollegeSwimming.com, then gave Knapp a sprint threat to go along with Egan’s distance abilities.

Olmsted’s best times are in the 100 free and 100 fly events. He clocked a 44.28 in the 100-yard free at the 2012 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals less than a year ago, and also had a strong meet at the 2013 NCSA Junior Nationals in March live on SwimmingWorld.TV. He clocked a 48.73 in the 100-yard fly, a 1:49.05 in the 200-yard fly and a 23.22 in the 50-yard back all in Orlando, Fla., in his home state. Olmsted is pretty versatile in terms of sprint yard events with a 20.46 in the 50-yard free and a 49.99 in the 100-yard back.

In the long course format, Olmsted’s top times are a 27.86 in the 50-meter back, a 57.76 in the 100 back and a 55.57 in the 100 fly.

It took Stanford a bit to build some momentum, but this weekend definitely helped the men’s Class of 2014 catch up to the women’s already amazing recruiting class. The Stanford men now have commitments from No. 5 Curtis Ogren, No. 9 Andrew Liang, No. 25 Liam Egan and No. 31 Wes Olmsted, and the Cardinal aren’t done yet.
