BARTLETT, Alaska, November 6. THE Kodiak Bears girls team and the A.J. Dimond Lynx boys squad captured team titles at the Alaska State High School Championships Nov. 2-3.
Kodiak's 100 points gave them the team victory. A.J. Dimond edged out Ketchikan by a single point for second, 79-78. Juneau Douglas placed fourth (55), followed by Chugiak (50).
Ila Hughes and Tahna Lindquist contributed two wins each to the Bears' cause. Hughes swept the sprint freestyle events (50 free, 23.65; 100 free, 50.62), and Lindquist took charge of both the 500 free (4:57.08) and 200 IM (2:06.63). Jorie Lindquist cruised to a 1:53.78 victory in the 200 free. Sammye Jones joined the trio for wins in both the 200 free (1:36.58) and 400 free (3:31.96) relays.
Dimond's Jenny Wilcox defeated Juneau Douglas' Ciera Kelly in the 100 fly by just 1-hundredth (57.64-57.65). Wilcox's teammate, Kari Wray, grabbed the top spot on the podium in the 100 breast with her 1:06.80. Service's Victoria Adams claimed first in the 100 back, going 58.17. Chugiak's Kaitlin Friedli put together 371.65 points to win the diving event.
Juneau Douglas' squad of Haley Mertz, Dakota Isaak, Kelly and Talyn Ramos finished first in the 200 medley relay (1:49.00).
A.J. Dimond dominated the boys' portion of the meet, swimming and diving away with 131 points. Sitka wound up in second (67), with Kodiak third (49), Thunder Mountain fourth (47) and Petersburg fifth (44).
Dimond's 200 free relay of Erik Wilcox, Michael Summers, Thomas Monaghan and Jackson Ursin combined for a first-place 1:29.19. Cory Chan came on board with Ursin, Summers and Wilcox for their 3:14.86 triumph in the 400 free relay. Sitka's team of Louis Belley, Carl Sundstren-Brenner, R.J. Miller and Spencer Combs prevented a Dimond sweep with their first-place 1:38.91 in the 200 medley relay.
Dimond enjoyed 1-2 victories in both the 200 and 500 free from Jackson Ursin and Michael Summers. In the 200 race, Ursin had a fairly easy time of it (1:43.67-1:44.31). But in the 500, things were much tighter. Just 4-hundredths (4:40.94-4:40.98) separated the two swimmers. Dimond also collected an individual win from diver Cade Bennett (514.10).
Two other swimmers left Bartlett with two victories apiece. Petersburg's Abel Auelbach swept the sprint freestyle events with his 21.87 in the 50 free and 47.74 in the 100. And Sitka's Louis Belley posted winning times of 52.56 in the 100 back and 1:55.30 in the 200 IM.
The breaststroke and butterfly races both proved to be extremely close. The 100 fly went to Thunder Mountain's Kenny Fox, just ahead of Dimond's Erik Wilcox, 52.25-52.28. The 100 breast outcome was even closer--Juneau Douglas' Jonah Swanson edged out West Valley's Tommy D'Donoghue, 1:01.50-1:01.52.
