High School State Championships: CIF San Diego Section Divisions 1, 2; Boys, Girls

SAN DIEGO, California, May 23. SWIMMERS from the greater San Diego area competed in two divisions at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) San Diego Sectional Championships May 16-19.

Division 1
Torrey Pines High School grabbed the team title, scoring 194.5 points. Carlsbad found itself in second (174), followed closely by La Costa Canyon (171) and Rancho Bernardl (167). Westview placed fifth with 133 points.

Torrey Pines took first place in two of the three relays. The team of junior McKenna Garfein with seniors Allison DePeralta, Eva Pold and Nicole Skaggs posted winning times in the 200 medley (1:49.20) and 400 free (3:33.67). La Costa Canyon's 200 free squad of junior Shane Knight, plus freshmen Michelle Jacob, Rachel Kulik and Alex Fleischmann (1:40.01) spoiled a Torrey Pines relay sweep.

Mission Hills senior Justine Panian collected wins in both the 100 fly (55.62) and 50 free (23.34), as did Valerie Hull, a Westview sophomore, in the 100 and 200 free (50.18 and 1:48.82). Single-event champions included Rancho Bernardo seniors Riley Spitser (500 free, 4:54.12) and Katie Anderson (100 back, 57.75), Carlsbad sophomore Sherri mcIntee (100 breast, 1:04.55), Torrey Pines' DePeralta (200 IM, 2:05.14) and Poway senior Ali Gill (1-meter diving, 246.05).

In the boys competition, Fallbrook was the top team with 170 points. La Costa Canyon was second (152), with Rancho Bernardo third (128) and Granite Hills fourth (115). Carlsbad edged El Camino for fifth, 110-109.

Rancho Bernardo senior Trent Williams was the only swimmer in Division 1 to set CIF records. He lowered San Diego CIF records in both the 100 and 200 free (44.48 and 1:37.03). Also putting together two victories was La Costa Canyon senior Mickey Mackle in the 100 back (51.87) and 200 IM (1:53.52).

Fallbrook's individual champions were senior Mike Maryn (50 free, 21.44) and freshman Robert Guerra (500 free, 4:36.48). Also climbing to the top of the podium stand were Bonita Vista junior Anthony Ribal (100 breast, 58.53), Eastlake senior Luca Casimoro (100 fly, 51.23) and Poway senior Nathan Borchert (246.40 points).

Relay titles were claimed by Rancho Bernardo's 200 medley relay team of sophomores Liam Semple, Jack Bell, Tanner Williams plus Trent Williams (1:39.51); Fallbrook's 200 free relay squad of senior Garrett McKeown, junior Samuel McDaniels, Guerra and Maryn (1:27.53); and La Costa Canyon's 400 free relay quartet of Mackle, junior Chris Indudhara, senior Jasen Missailidis and freshman Liam McCloskey (3:13.93).

Division 2
Four CIF San Diego and two division marks fell during the Division 2 portion of the CIF San Diego Sectionals.

Brandon Crabtree, a sophomore at Southwest, lowered CIF San Diego records in both the 50 and 100 free (20.42 and 45.18). Also setting sectional marks were Valley Center freshman Makayla Markey (girls 50 free, 23.30) and Taylor Pamplin, a freshman at Escondido Charter (girls 1-meter diving, 262.15 points). Codi Saunders, a senior at Valhalla, posted Division 2 record swims of 56.56 in the boys 100 breast and 1:50.88 in the 200 IM.

Markey also claimed the 100 free with her 50.79. Other double-event champions included Cathedral Catholic junior Roslyn Kackman (200 free, 1:50.88; 100 fly, 56.78) and Mt. Carmel sophomore Grant Schenk (200 and 500 free, 1:40.48 and 4:28.70).

Taking first place in the girls competition were Cathedral Catholic junior Molly Barry (500 free, 4:56.85) and senior Katie Kochalko (100 breast, 1:07.83), Ramona junior Gina Lucas (200 IM, 2:07.07) and Santana junior Sara Lenhoff (100 back, 56.14). Boys champions were The Bishop's School junior Tom Anderson (100 back, 51.89), Mt. Carmel senior Nguyen Hong (100 fly, 51.12) and Steele Canyon junior Ryan Krantz (diving, 238.85).

Cathedral Catholic senior Jenna Harris and freshman Mary Roberts combined with Kochalko and Kackman to post wins in both the girls 200 medley (1:50.19) and 400 free (3:35.23). Mt. Carmel, with the team of senior Shuchi Chaturvedi, freshman Sabrina Hughes, sophomore Jordan Gormaly and senior Dana Jones, captured the 200 free relay in 1:39.35.

On the boys side, the Steele Canyon quartet of seniors Conner Clark and David Mai, sophomore Shawn Howen and junior Marco Russo swept the freestyle relays (200 free, 1:27.35; 400 free, 3:11.67). Valhalla captured the 200 medley relay with the team of Saunders, senior Nolan Faucher, freshman Michael Salazar and junior Alex Dillingham (1:37.18).

Cathedral Catholic was the top girls team, scoring 268 points, with Mt. Carmel second (214), Valhalla (182), San Marcos (84) and Steele Canyon (70). Valhalla emerged on top in the boys competition with 204 points. Mt. Carmel was the runner-up team (188), followed by Steele Canyon (131), La Jolla (115) and The Bishop's School (94).
