High School State Championships: Pennsylvania 2A and 3A

LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania, March 20. BUCKNELL University in Lewisburg was the site of the Pennsylvania 2A and 3A State High School Swimming and Diving Championships. Division 2A action took place March 14-15, and 3A swimmers and divers took to the pool March 16-17.

Division 2A
Six girls state records fell during the 2A meet. Individual records were set by Mifflinburg sophomore Adrianna Grabski in the 50 free (23.20), Mars Area junior Margaret Gruber in the 100 fly (53.50) and Trinity's Ashley Buchter in the diving competition (482.80 points).

Both Grabski and Gruber took top honors in a second event. Grabski's second win came in the 100 free (50.40), and Grubber grabbed the 100 back (54.54).

All three relay records fell as well. Villa Maria's 200 free relay of junior Sarah Hitchens, freshman Julie Dobson, junior Kaitlyn Alvanos and senior Julia Murphy combined for a 1:36.39; juniors Molly O'Brien and Lauren Law joined Dobson and Hitchens to lower the 400 free relay mark to 3:30.96. Central Columbia's 200 medley relay squad of freshman Katie Madden, junior Nicole Brunozzi, sophomore Beth Grazio and junior Katie Saloky claimed the 200 medley state mark with their 1:46.89.

Also emerging from the meet with championship titles were Allentown junior Sydney Stinner (200 free, 1:49.62), Trinity senior Caroline Finkbeiner (500 free, 4:53.68), Scranton Prep senior Rebekah Camp (100 breast, 1:03.84) and Mercyhurst Prep senior Marie Georger (200 IM, 2:01.30).

Villa Maria Academy took the team title with 221 points, ahead of Central Columbia (186), Mercyhurst Prep (141), West Allegheny (137) and Scranton Prep (134).

Fairview grabbed the boys team title with 180 points. Mars Area came in second (113), followed closely by Shady Side Academy (107), Salisbury (106) and Franklin Area (105).

Fairview was led by its state champion diver, senior Dan Roberts, who set the only new boys state mark with his 496.45 points. Fairview relays also came out on top in two of the three events. Seniors Richard Petrella, Harrison Grimm, Alex Borowski and Carl Nerthling combined for a 1:36.67 in the 200 medley and 3:13.47 in the 400 free.

Petrella picked up an individual swimming title for Fairview with his 1:52.69 in the 200 IM, as did Grimm in the 200 free (1:43.42).

Six swimmers picked up an event win each: Susquehanna Township junior Nathan Smith (50 free, 20.87), Franklin area sophomore Phil Emerson (100 free, 46.04), West York senior Bradley Strathmeyer (500 free, 4:34.46), Mars Area senior Kurt Muehlheuser (100 back, 51.93), Quaker Valley senior Bobby Francis (100 breast, 57.33) and Salisburg junior Eric Tatum (100 fly, 51.20).

Shady Side's 200 free relay of senior Chris Leech, juniors Ryan Koul and Thaddeus Ellis, and senior Grant Zentgraf posted a 1:27.24 for the victory in that event.

Division 3A
Wilson grabbed the girls team title with 231 points, ahead of Hershey's 218, North Allegheny's 146, Franklin Regional's 121 and Parkland's 114.

Six state records were erased during the girls portion of the 3A meet. Hershey sophomore Meghan Raab claimed two marks with her 49.01 in the 100 free and 1:45.10 in the 200 free. Warwick junior Emily Cameron also took two standards down with her 22.75 in the 50 free and 1:00.54 in the 100 breast.

Christina Leander, a junior at West Chester East, bettered the state standard in the 100 back with her 54.14. She also collected a second win in the 200 IM (2:00.61). North Allegheny's 200 free relay of juniors Katerina Borisov and Arielle Krigger, with seniors Allie Pennetti and Kalli Vanderbilt combined for a state record-setting 1:33.78 in the 200 free relay.

Wilson's 200 medley relay squad of sophomores Alexandra Rockett and Amber Cortazzo, with seniors Kylie Reiter and Erin Timochenko, missed a state record by 1-hundredth with their 1:44.29.

Taylor O'Brien, an Emmaus senior, placed first in the 500 free with her 4:52.60. Lauren, a senior at Pine Richland, was the top diver, scoring 447.75 points.

LaSalle College High School easily captured the 3A boys team title, scoring 323.5 points to Hershey's 210, North Allegheny's 144, Upper Dublin's 119 and Upper St. Clair's 117.

LaSalle College's 200 medley relay of junior Joseph Maginnis, sophomore Michael McBryan, senior Luke Maguire and junior Gregory Roberts erased the state record with their 1:31.83. LaSalle College also placed first in the 200 free (1:22.91) and 400 free (3:02.74) relays.

Two seniors closed out their high school careers with double victories. Haverford's Shane Ryan captured first place in both the 50 free (19.91) and 100 back (47.17), and Penn Trafford's Christian McCurdy posted times of 4:28.39 in the 500 free and 48.80 in the 100 fly.

Several seniors were also involved in single-event triumphs. North Penn's Jason Deana pulled out a 45.17-45.21 victory over Greater Latrobe's Lucas Bureau. Bureau had claimed the 200 free title earlier in the meet with his 1:38.33. Freedom's Seth Watlington was first in the 100 breast (55.89), followed closely by Hershey's Kyle Ruddle (55.96). And North Allegheny's Matthew Buerger's put together a win in the 200 IM (1:48.22).
