High School State Championships: Alaska Boys, Girls

BARTLETT, Alaska, November 10. DIMOND High School took home the combined team title from the Alaska High School State Championships, held Nov. 4-5 in Bartlett. Dimond swimmers combined for 197 points; Kodiak finished second with 159, followed by Ketchikan (102), Juneau Douglas (85) and Homer (70).

Three girls enjoyed victories in two events each. Kodiak's Ila Hughes swept the freestyle events with times of 23.88 in the 50 free and 51.67 in the 100 free. Hughes' teammate, Tahna Lindquist, topped the field in both the 500 free (5:10.40) and 200 IM (2:10.30). And East's Sam Wicks posted victories in the 200 free (1:50.88) and 100 back (54.78).

Dimond's Kari Wray led from start to finish in her 100 breast win of 1:07.24. Ketchikan's Janelle Stacy flew to a 100 fly title in 56.56. Kaitlin Friedli from Chugiak was the top diver, scoring 355.05 points.

Ketchikan's 200 medley relay team of Isabel Stephens, Kassandra Klose and Stacy found themselves 36-hundredths behind the Juneau squad of Haley Mertz, Dakota Isaak and Auri Clark. Ella Sherrill caught up to Ciera Kelly in the final 50 yards to give Ketchikan a 3-hundredths margin of victory, 1:49.88 to 1:49.91. Wicks, Carrie Sauerbrey, Jesi Cavanaugh and McKinley Wallace gave East High the victory in the 200 free relay (1:38.49) and Kodiak's quartet of Jori Lindquist, Tahna Lindquist, Celeste Beck-Goodell and Hughes put together a 3:33.88 in the 400 free relay.

Dimond's team of Cory Chan, Joseph Sandstrom, Erik Wilcox and Austin Hummel posted a 1:38.49 in the 200 medley relay to claim first place. Jackson Ursin joined Wilcox, Chan and Hummel to give Dimond an additional relay title in the 400 free with their 3:14.97. Richard Ginter, James Reid, Nathanael Hardy and Kyle Wentz prevented Dimond from a clean sweep with their 1:30.11-1:30.56 triumph.

As in the girls competition, three boys also emerged as double-event champions. Dimond's Ursin claimed first in the 200 (1:45.38) and 500 (4:49.44) free. Petersburg's Preston Marsh was the only sub-1:00 swimmer in the 100 breast (59.22) and picked up a second win in the 200 IM (1:55.27). Nathan Messing from Juneau was 2-tenths ahead of Sitka's Louis Belley in the 100 back (53.18-53.38) and claimed the 100 fly event by 13-hundredths from Ginter.

Ginter enjoyed victory in the 50 free with his 21.82, and Hummel nabbed first in the 100 free in 48.19. Cade Bennett, diving for Dimond, came in first with 474.75 points.
