Doha World Cup Day Two: Who’s Collecting Medals and Money?

DOHA, Qatar, October 6. THE first day of this weekend's two-day FINA World Cup meet in Doha played out a lot like the first World Cup stop earlier this week in Dubai. Katinka Hosszu maintained her dominance among the women and upped her total winnings by a hefty $5,000, while Japan's Daiya Seto continued his hold among the men.

The women are few in numbers at this meet, causing officials to eliminate their preliminary heats in a number of events on day one. Day two looks similar, with both prelims and finals only in the women's 100IM. Whether this helps Hosszu towards her total winnings is up for debate — although no one can argue that swimmers love additional rest.

Day two on Doha will be just as exciting as day one. The men have their shot at a distance freestyle event with the 1500 freestyle, while the women have a tough 400 freestyle, 400IM double. The men's 50 freestyle will be the race to watch, with practically every “big name” swimmer entered in it. From Anthony Ervin, the 50 freestyle winner in Dubai looking for a repeat to Roland Schoeman, who proved yesterday he's a sprint master by taking the win in the 50 butterfly and placing second in the 50 breaststroke, it's going to be fast!
