Harvard Extends Lead at Ivy League Championships; Longstanding Steve Lundquist, David Berkoff Pool Records Downed

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, February 28. THE Harvard men extended their lead after the second day of the Ivy League Championships as the Crimson became the first team to clear 1000 points.

Heading into day three, Harvard leads with 1011 points, while Princeton stands second with 929 points. Penn (723), Columbia (652.5) and Yale (632) make up the rest of the top five, while Dartmouth (477), Brown (474.5) and Cornell (377) comprise the rest of team scoring.

Princeton’s Michael Strand, Marco Bove, Connor Maher and Harrison Wagner opened the night with a pool-record time of 1:27.16 in the men’s 200-yard medley relay. That effort surpassed Harvard’s 2008 mark of 1:27.88. Penn’s Philip Hu, Kyle Yu, Rhoads Worster and Eric Schultz finished second in 1:27.33, while Harvard’s Jack Manchester, Danny Crigler, Oliver Lee and Griffin Schumacher took third in 1:27.44 all under the pool mark. Schumacher, notably, dropped an 18.99 anchor leg to lead Harvard home.

In an epic battle in the men’s 1000-yard free, Yale’s Brian Hogan had just too much left in the tank to hold off a hard-charging Chris Swanson of Penn for the win. Hogan clinched the title in 8:52.88, while Swanson took second in 8:53.02, both under the meet record of 8:54.86 set by Princeton’s Paul Nolle in 2012. The duo also smashed Ryan Feeley’s 2009 pool mark of 8:57.35. Princeton’s Zachary Ridout wound up third overall in 9:05.75.

Princeton freshman Samuel Smiddy stepped up big in the men’s 400-yard IM with a 3:47.33 to beat Geoff Rathgeber’s 2008 pool record of 3:47.83. Columbia’s Kevin Quinn took a distant second with a 3:49.02, while Yale’s Kevin Stang snared third in 3:50.22.

Brown’s Thomas Glenn provided yet another revision to the facility records with a 46.13 in the 100-yard fly. That beat Doug Lennox’s 2009 record of 46.19 swum for Princeton here in Cambridge. Columbia’s David Jakl took second in 46.48, while Penn’s Rhoads Worster picked up third in 47.05.

Following his monster anchor leg, Satterthwaite led a Harvard 1-2 in the mens’ 200-yard free with a 1:35.73. Aly Abdel Khalik finished second in 1:36.61, while Princeton’s Sandy Bole earned third in 1:36.66.

After a brief respite, the pool records started falling yet again as Dartmouth’s Nejc Zupan dropped a 53.52 in the men’s 100-yard breast. That beat his prelim mark of 53.56, that had lowered Steve Lundquist’s long-standing 1980 mark of 53.59 set for SMU. Harvard’s Eric Ronda claimed second in 53.88, while Princeton’s Byron Sanborn took third in 54.19.

After Michael Strand of Princeton took down the 1989 pool record of 47.33 set by Harvard’s David Berkoff in the 100-yard back with a 47.31, Strand and Dartmouth’s James Verhagen both eclipsed Strand’s short-lived mark. Strand took the title in 46.80, while Verhagen finished runner-up with a 47.20. Cornell’s Dylan Sali rounded out the top three in 47.61.

Harvard’s Aly Abdel Khalik, Spenser Goodman, Zachary Walters and Christ Satterthwaite demolished the pool record in the men’s 800-yard free relay with a 6:25.84. That performance finished well ahead of Auburn’s 1980 time of 6:28.07 anchored by Rowdy Gaines. Princeton’s Teo D’Alessandro, Connor Maher, Julian Mackrel and Sandy Bole took second in 6:27.66, while Yale’s Brian Hogan, Rob Harder, Ben Lerude and Victor Zhang touched third in 6:34.69.
