Navy Men, Women In Lead After Day One of Patriot League Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland, February 19. THE Navy men’s and women’s teams took the early lead in the 2014 Patriot League Swimming and Diving championships by each capturing a pair of relay events on the first night of action from Lejeune Hall.

The Navy men set a pair of Pool, League and Championship records with wins in the 200 Medley Relay and 800 Freestyle Relay. The quartet of Brendan Walsh, Sean Murphy, Jonathan DeBaugh and Dain Bomberger bettered their mark of 1:27.37 in the 200 Medley Relay set on Dec. 12, 2013 with a time of 1:26.25.

Army’s time of 1:27.90 bettered the previous Championship mark of 1:28.60 set by the Mids in 2012, but was only good enough for second place on this night. Boston University finished third in 1:29.10.

In the 800 Freestyle Relay, Navy’s Thomas Duvall, Riley Mita, Alex Nickell and Hugh Davison finished in 6:28.62 to better the league and meet record of 6:31.95 by more than three seconds.

Boston University was second in 6:31.96 and Army third in 6:37.18.

The Navy women started off the evening with a win in the 200 Medley Relay by edging Army for the top spot. Anna Brooks, Hanna Gilcrist, Rheanna Vaughn and Olivia Morrell finished in 1:41.88 just .26 ahead of their counterparts from Army. Bucknell took third in 1:42.94.

In the second to last event of the night, Kenzie Margroum, Jessi Ford, Charlotte Meyer and Maddie Thompson put themselves in the record book for the Mids by capturing the 800 Freestyle Relay in 7:20.05. This broke the previous meet and league record of 7:20.29 set by Colgate in 2011.

Boston University was second in 7:21.82 and Lehigh third in 7:22.42.

Sandwiched between all of the relay action was the finals of the women’s 3-meter diving. After eight dives, Boston University senior Chelsea Glincman came out on top with a score of 269.15.

Bucknell junior Tara Boyle was second at 265.90 and Navy sophomore Julie Jesse third in 244.85.

On the strength of sweeping the two relay events, the Mids are not surprisingly on top of the standings after day one.

The Navy women have 108 points heading into Thursday ahead of Army with Boston University next at 104 and Bucknell in third at 88. The Navy men have 80 points through two events and lead Army and Boston University who are tied with 66.

The action will resume on patriotleague.tv beginning at 10:30 a.m. with preliminaries and an evening session of finals starting at 6 p.m.
