ACC Countdown: Christine Wixted and Nick McCrory

Teams from all across the eastern seaboard have descended to one of the hottest locales in swimming, Greensboro. Host to some sort of meet pretty much every weekend, the Greensboro Aquatic Center will be the home to the women’s and men’s ACC Championships once again and also house the 2015 women’s NCAA Championships. The first relays of the meet, the 200 medley and 800 free, start off the meet in under 24 hours’ time as the women and also the male divers of the ACC battle.

This week brings the final edition of ACC Countdown featuring two seniors from Duke who were among the top performers at last year’s championships. Christine Wixted finished second in both the 100 and 200 breast last year, and she enters this meet with the third-fastest time in the conference in the 100 breast — a time which ranks her in the top-16 nationally — and a strong chance to finish in the A-final in the 200 breast and 200 IM.

A competitor at the 2012 Olympic Trials and also last year’s NCAAs, Wixted took time recently to talk with Swimming World’s David Rieder about her final season as a Blue Devil, her expectations for the conference meet, and her perception of how the program has grown during her time in Durham.

Nick McCrory is a name familiar to any fan of the ACC or of Olympic sports. At the 2012 Olympic Games, McCrory teamed with David Boudia to win bronze in the 10 meter synchro platform, and he has won three NCAA titles (2010, 2011, 2013) in the event at NCAAs. One of the most successful performers in ACC history, McCrory heads to Greensboro looking to sweep the three diving events for the second straight year at ACCs.

In his conversation with Rieder, McCrory shares his thoughts on his Olympic experience and the notoriety he experienced when he returned to school along with fellow diving medalist Abby Johnston. McCrory also shares some insight into what his future may hold following this championship season.
