USC Men’s Swimming Falls To California

LOS ANGELES, California, February 7. ANY doubts on the state of the California men’s swim team after yesterday’s performances during yesterday’s dual meet with Cal State Bakersfield were mostly erased today, as the Golden Bears handily defeated Southern California 174-125.

The Trojans likely hoped to christen the new Uytengsu Aquatics Center with a win, but couldn’t beat one of their conference rivals in a competition that showed not only Cal’s strength but Southern California’s depth in freestyle that kept the meet relatively close.

Several events featured some close battles for wins. After a Cal win in the 200 medley relay, Jeremy Bagshaw and Cristian Quintero had a knock-down battle in the 1000 free, with Quintero using some early speed to dictate the pace. Bagshaw, who is the fastest collegiate swimmer in the event this season with an 8:57.41, just beat Quintero at the finish, 9:02.19 to 9:02.24.

One of two individual wins for USC came in the 200 free, as Dmitri Colupaev came back from fourth at the 100 to beat Cal’s Trent Williams to the wall. Colupaev posted a 1:37.04 to Williams’ 1:37.46.

Cal would win the next seven events. Ryan Murphy won two of those races, sweeping the backstrokes with times of 46.95 in the 100 and 1:43.52 in the 200. His teammate, Jacob Pebley, was second in both races with times of 48.26 and 1:44.46. Bagshaw also got a double victory with a 4:21.19 to beat Quintero by eight seconds in the 500 free.

Also taking part in that seven-event streak for Cal was Chuck Katis, who won the 100 breast in 54.70; Marcin Tarczynski with a 200 fly win in 1:45.79; Henry Chung who posted a 20.56 to win the 50 free; and Tyler Messerschmidt, who won the 100 free with a 44.13 over Colupaev’s 44.36 and Southern Cal’s Santo Condorelli’s 44.81.

Maclin Davis was the other event winner for Cal as he got the victory in the 100 fly with a time of 47.53. Cal’s Josh Prenot won the events before and after Davis’ 100 fly victory, taking the 200 breast with a 1:59.22 (five tenths ahead of Katis) and the 400 IM in 3:51.93.
