North Carolina State Press Release

The No. 21 NC State men’s swimming & diving team captured a victory against No. 20 Virginia on Saturday afternoon at the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center. The men defeated the Cavaliers by a final of 157-141, while the 21st-ranked women’s team fell to the Cavs, 178.5-115.5.

The men’s squad finishes its home slate with a perfect 4-0 record and improves to 5-5 on the season, while the women’s team now owns a 6-5 ledger.

“I thought we were emotionally ready to go after a tough day yesterday,” said head coach Braden Holloway. “It was our senior day, so I knew it would be emotional. We had a lot of people step up for us today, including people other than the seniors.”

The Wolfpack picked up a sweep in the relay events for the second consecutive meet and earned 12 individual victories.

“I am especially happy for the guys today,” Holloway said. “It was a senior-led day and that was a big win for the guys.”

State started the meet by winning the men’s and women’s 200 medley relay. On the women’s side, the team of Zina Grogg, Lauren Poli, Ashlyn Koletic and Riki Bonnema finished first with a time of 1:40.51. The men’s squad posted a one-two finish in the event, with the quartet of Andreas Schiellerup, Ian Bishop, Barrett Miesfeld and David Williams posting a first-place finish in a time of 1:28.60.

Boffa and sophomore Christian McCurdy paced the men’s squad with two victories in individual events.

A senior from Verona, Italy, Boffa won his first event of the day in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:37.72.

Boffa, who was competing in the final home meet of his career, picked up his second win of the day in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.80, as the Pack swept the event with a one-two-three finish. Simonas Bilis finished second in the event with a time of 45.31, while Scott Johnson tapped the wall in 45.79 to finish third.

Other seniors to earn victories in their final home meet included Miesfeld in the 100 butterfly with a time of 47.10 and Bishop in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.75.

The men’s squad concluded the meet by posting a one-two finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet of Bilis, Boffa, Schiellerup and Williams finished first overall after tapping the wall in 1:19.60.

“We build our program around sprinters,” Holloway said. “Sprinting for us comes first, because of the points. The points are so big. It’s not just the points, but it’s the energy that the relays create for the entire group. Our sprinters are a very dynamic bunch.”

On the women’s side, Grogg captured a victory in her final home meet in the 100 butterfly with a time of 54.82.

Hannah Freyman posted a victory in the 100 free with a time of 50.89, while Bonnema tapped the wall first in the 50 free with a time of 23.12. In addition, Kayla Brumbaum finished first in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.68.

The women’s team concluded the meet by posting a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, as the team of Poli, Koletic, Natalie Labonge and Bonnema finished in a time of 1:30.86.

“The ladies are getting better and better,” Holloway said. “That is the best team in the ACC that they’re going head-to-head against.”

In diving, Grant Saale posted a score of 325.20 in the men’s three-meter competition, while Gabrielle McDermott scored a 241.35 in the women’s one-meter competition.

The Pack honored its 13 seniors on the roster prior to the start of the meet.

“Those seniors started their career with a different coaching staff,” Holloway said. “They wanted change and wanted something that was new and now everything is different. They’re a good group. They’re all very different and we’re going to miss them.”

Up next, the women’s squad and men’s divers will travel to Greensboro, N.C. to participate in the ACC Championships from Feb. 19-22. The men’s squad will participate in the Men’s ACC Championships from Feb. 26-March 1 in Greensboro.
