Virginia Tops ACC Rival Duke

DURHAM, North Carolina, January 24. THE University of Virginia swimming and diving team won 23 of 32 events en route to a sweep of ACC rival Duke on Friday night. It was a total team effort for the Cavaliers, as 19 different athletes picked up individual wins. Parker Camp and Laura Simon both doubled, as Camp won the 100 back and 200 fly and Simon swept the 100 and 200 breast. U.S. Olympian Nick McCrory won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events for Duke.

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Duke Friday evening (Jan. 24) at the Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion. The Cavalier women (8-1) defeated the Blue Devils 187.5-98.5, while the UVa men (5-3) were victorious, 178-119.

The Cavaliers won 23 events with 19 individuals picking up solo event victories, including senior Parker Camp (Brentwood, Tenn.), who finished first in the men’s 100 back and 200 fly, and freshman Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany), who won the women’s 100 and 200 breaststroke.

Other female event winners on the day were junior Kelly Offutt (Reisterstown, Md.) in the 1,000 free, sophomore Haley Durmer (Decatur, Ga.) in the 200 free, senior Caroline Kenney (Suwanee, Ga.) in the 100 back, freshman Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) in the 200 fly, senior Emily Lloyd (Severna Park, Md.) in the 100 free, junior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) in the 200 back, sophomore Hanne Borgersen (Frederick, Md.) in the 500 free, freshman Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the 400 IM and sophomore Katie Warburg (Wilton, Conn.) on the 3-meter diving boards.

Men’s event winners for Virginia included senior Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) in the 1,000 free, senior Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va.) in the 200 free, freshman Matt Lockman (Charlottesville, Va.), senior Nathan Hart (Asheville, N.C.) in the 200 back, senior Taylor Grey (Williston, Vt.) in the 200 breast, freshman Austin Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) in the 500 free, junior Kyle Dudzinski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) in the 100 fly and junior David Ingraham (Spartanburg, S.C.) in the 400 IM.

The women’s 400 medley relay of sophomore Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.), Simon, Williamson and Lloyd picked up a win in 3:42.77, while the men’s 200 free relay of Camp, junior Charlie Rommel (East Amherst, N.Y.), Dudzinski and Lockman won in a time of 1:23.79.

The Cavaliers are back in action Saturday (Jan. 25) when they face North Carolina at noon in Chapel Hill, N.C.
