Virginia Tech Men Lead Harvard, Virginia, Wisconsin; Women Lead Miami In Five Team Meet

CHRISTIANSBURG, Virginia, January 17. AFTER one day of competition in Christiansburg, the Virginia Tech men’s swimming diving team leads Harvard, Virginia and Wisconsin, while the Virginia Tech women are up on Miami in a five-team dual meet hosted by the Hokies.

The Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams won four of the 14 events on Friday evening, as the H2Okies got off to a strong start against Virginia, Wisconsin, Miami and Harvard at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Junior Morgan Latimer and sophomore Michal Szuba, who both took home victories last weekend as well, paced the men on the evening, as both swimmer touched the wall first in their event.

Latimer cruised to victory by almost two seconds in the 200 Butterfly, clocking a 1:47.43 to earn his third win in two weeks this spring. Freshman Jan Switkowski finished just behind Latimer, taking runner-up honors with a time of 1:49.15.

Szuba took the top spot in the 1650 Freestyle, touching the wall with a time of 15:33.41 to best a trio of Virginia swimmers that finished just behind him.

The men also performed well on the boards, as the H2Okies took five of the top seven spots in the 3-meter diving event. Senior Ryan Hawkins led the way, capturing runner-up honors with a score of 357.80. TJ Shinholser (341.75) and John Trope (338.50) were just behind in third and fourth, respectively.

The No. 15-ranked men are leading all three of their contests after Friday night’s action. Tech leads No. 18 Virginia, 76.5-54.5, and is up 73-58 on No. 24 Harvard. The H2Okies also own a commanding 85-46 lead over Wisconsin, who is receiving votes in the national poll.

On the women’s side, sophomore Weronika Paluszek captured her second win in as many weeks by mere inches, as her time of 2:14.76 in the 200 Breaststroke took top honors, just in front of Laura Simon of Virginia, who finished in 2:14.79.

Junior Kaylea Arnett was the H2Okies other winner on the evening, as she fought off a trio of divers from Miami to capture the 1-meter diving win, her first of 2014, with a score of 318.75.

After the first session, the women are up on Miami, 89-38, though they trail No. 9 Virginia, 85-46, and Wisconsin, 74-55.

Action will begin at 9 a.m., on Saturday morning, while the afternoon session will begin at 1 p.m. The H2Okies will recognize their 12 seniors in a short ceremony just before the afternoon session.

The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams won four events Friday evening (Jan. 17) on the first day of a meet at Virginia Tech, that also featured Wisconsin, Harvard’s men and Miami’s women.

On the women’s side, Virginia leads Virginia Tech, 85-46, Wisconsin, 84-46, and Miami, 97-32. On the men’s side, Virginia leads Harvard, 69-62, and Wisconsin, 76-55, but trails Virginia Tech, 73-58.

In the first event of the meet, freshman Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the women’s 1,650 free in a time of 16:17.84, ahead of sophomore Hanne Borgersen (Frederick, Md.), who finished second in 16:54.99.

Sophomore Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) captured the women’s 200 back in 1:57.03, while freshman Kaitlyn Jones (Newark, Del.) was second in 1:58.61.

In the women’s 200 fly, junior Ellen Williamson (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) touched first in 2:00.13, ahead of classmate Shaun Casey (Port Orange, Fla.), who placed second in 2:01.07.

Freshman Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany) placed second in the women’s 200 breast in 2:14.79.

On the men’s side, junior JB Kolod (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 389.70.

Seniors Jan Daniec (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Brad Phillips (Herndon, Va.) placed second and third in the 1,650 free in 15:38.86 and 15:48.64, respectively.

Junior Luke Papendick (Kinnelon, N.J) placed second in the 200 back in 1:45.35, while senior Taylor Grey (Williston, Vt.) and junior David Ingraham (Spartanburg, S.C.) picked up third-place finishes in the 200 breast (2:01.25) and 200 fly (1:49.40), respectively.

Senior Emily Lloyd (Severna Park, Md.) was the runner-up in the women’s 100 free in 51.19, while junior Kyle Dudzinski (Pittsburgh, Pa.) placed seventh in the men’s 100 free in 46.02.

Sophomore Becca Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) placed seventh on the women’s 1-meter diving boards with a score of 266.60.

In the final events of the day, the women’s 400 free relay of Smith, Williamson, Bartholomew and Lloyd finished second in a time of 3:24.71, while the men’s 400 free relay placed fourth in 3:02.98.

The action continues Saturday (Jan. 18). The morning swim session will start at 9 a.m. with the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 800 free relay events. Diving continues at 10:30 a.m. with the women’s 3m and men’s 1m, while the final swim session starts at 1 p.m. with the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 400 medley relay being contested.
