Chase Kalisz Clears Up Academic Issues, Bauerle Still Suspended

ATHENS, Georgia, January 17. ALTHOUGH the team isn’t explaining just why it suspended both head coach Jack Bauerle and sophomore swimmer Chase Kalisz due to some academic issues with Kalisz in the past month, Georgia announced tonight that Kalisz is now clear to return to competition.

The University of Georgia announced today that sophomore swimmer Chase Kalisz is in good academic standing and will return to competition when the Bulldogs face Tennessee on Saturday, Jan. 25.

“Chase has demonstrated outstanding patience and character throughout this review,” said UGA J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Greg McGarity. “We are very excited to have resolved his situation quickly so Chase can rejoin his teammates in competition.”

On Jan. 4, news broke that Bauerle and Kalisz would be suspended indefinitely pending an academic review. It wound up costing Bauerle the chance to celebrate his 500th career dual meet victory as a coach.

This wasn’t the first time Kalisz has run into some academic issues, but he hasn’t had a problem with clearing things up. As a freshman, he had to delay enrollment until the spring semester as he ironed out some academics. The specifics regarding his academic problems this time around have not been made public, but Georgia still hasn’t let Bauerle off the hook yet.

When asked a follow up question by Swimming World regarding Bauerle’s status, Georgia spokesperson Steve Colquitt responded:

Coach Bauerle’s status remains unchanged and this is an ongoing matter.

Bauerle is still coaching practices, but is being withheld from competition by Georgia Athletics until the academic review comes to a close.
