Purdue Women Stay Undefeated In Duals As Boilermakers Sweep Michigan State

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, January 12. THE Purdue women’s swimming and diving team stayed undefeated in dual meets this season as both Boilermaker teams defeated Michigan State on Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette. Overall, the Boilermakers won 27 of 32 events at the meet.

Three women and two men each posted multiple individual victories to lead the Purdue swimming and diving teams to a dual meet sweep of Michigan State Saturday afternoon to cap a busy weekend of action at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

The No. 20 Purdue women won 14 of the 16 events and took the meet, 167-125, to remain undefeated (7-0) in dual meet action this season. The Purdue men won 13 of the 16 events and the meet, 187.5-112.5, to improve to 6-2 in dual meets in 2013-14.

Jamie Bissett (diving sweep), Michelle Cabassol (diving sweep), Lyam Dias (breaststroke sweep), Meagan Lim (butterfly sweep) and Carly Mercer (50 free and 200 IM) each won two individual events for the Boilermakers. Austin Flager, Danny Tucker and Kylie Vogel each contributed to both of their teams’ relays wins.

The Purdue women had least each of the top three finishers in the 1-meter diving, 50 and 200 freestyle, 100 and 200 backstroke, and 200 IM. The Purdue men finished one-two in both diving events as well as the 50, 100, 500 and 1650 free.

Along with Lim’s butterfly sweep, fellow freshmen Filip Bujoczek (200 free), Josh Ehrman (200 IM), Grace Hernandez (500 free) and Hannah Manger (200 back) each won an individual event for the Boilermakers Saturday.

Manuel Gutierrez and Jan Petric finished one-two in the men’s 500 free and were part of the most exciting finish of the day. Gutierrez rallied to win the event after coming out on top of a tight finish that saw both Boilers and MSU’s Jonathon Burke all touch within four tenths of a second of each other.

Luke Trimmer posted a new Purdue season-best time (15:37.71) in the mile while winning the event. Allie Davis came up just shy of finishing the 1000 free in under 10 minutes, but still managed to post a personal season-best time of 10:00.34 while winning the event. Guillermo Blanco (100 fly winner, second in the 100 fly), Francesca Marr (200 breast winner, second in the 200 free), Nika Karlina Petric (200 free winner, second in the 200 back), Davis (second in the 100 free) and Mercer (two wins, second in the 100 back) each had an event victory and a second-place showing.

Led by Bissett and Cabassol, the Boilers dominated the diving events and claimed 11 of the top 12 finishes. Cabassol posted personal season-best scores from both the 1-meter (313.73) and 3-meter (364.14) competitions.

Blanco, Davis, Dias, Friede, Hernandez, Manger, Marr, Mercer, Tucker and Vogel each won at least one individual event and contributed to a relay winner.

Nine members (eight swimmers and one diver) of the Purdue men’s team will be back in action next weekend at the six-team Classic @ SMU. The Purdue women are idle next weekend before returning to action Saturday, Jan. 25 for the annual rivalry dual meet at No. 11 Indiana.

The Michigan State swimming and diving team recorded eight event wins, but lost on the road to Purdue on Saturday with the men falling by a score of 112.5-187.5, while the women dropped a 125-167 decision.

“We had some good swims,” said head coach Matt Gianiodis. “For being off for six weeks, I thought we had a lot of positives. Obviously, I think we would have liked to score a few more points. Give credit to Purdue, they really performed well. With the week that they had, I thought they did great. But our guys did pretty good, too. Bryan (Williams) won a couple of events. Shelby (Lacy) won a couple of events. Summer (Strickler) really swam well. It was probably one of her best dual meets ever. Nick Roberts had a great meet. I thought some of our young guys really performed well in a Big Ten environment. It’s encouraging. There’s work to do, but it’s encouraging for sure.”

The men were led by Bryan Williams, who took home a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.10. He also turned in a winning time of 1:50.42 to hit the wall first in the 200 butterfly.

MSU scored first and second-place points in the 200 breaststroke led by Nick Roberts, who swam a personal-best time of 2:07.08. He was followed closely by Alec Kandt with a time of 2:07.18.

Freshman Sam Hiller took home an individual win in the 200 backstroke. He posted a time of 1:52.40 for first place, while Adam Marsh (1:54.65) and Drew Goins (1:58.10) finished third and fourth, respectively.

In the 100 freestyle, Nick McGowan set a personal-best time of 46.60 as he finished in third place. In the 200 individual medley, Nate Weeks (1:54.25) and Roberts (1:56.64) took second and third, respectively.

Kandt continued to have a stellar meet as he placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.35. Following him was Roberts, who posted a season-best time of 58.54 to secure a fourth-place finish.

The men finished strong as the 400 freestyle relay team of Oguz Aslanoglu, Jacob Moore, Jake Austermann, and Adam Marsh swam a winning time of 3:08.00.

On the women’s side, Summer Stickler led the Spartans with a win in the 100 freestyle as she clocked a time of 51.94.

Shelby Lacy earned an individual win as she swam a time of 1:05.28 to take first-place points in the 100 breaststroke. She was closely followed by Kennedy Cutler, who posted a time of 1:06.64 for second place.

The Spartan women dominated the 200 individual medley, scoring first through fourth-place points in the event. MSU was led by Elizabeth Brown, who took home an individual win with a time of 2:09.73, followed by Hannah Pugh who swam a personal-best time of with 2:11.90. Jessica Cutler (2:13.73) and Marina Borri (2:14.46) finished third and fourth, respectively.

In the 50 freestyle, Michigan State finished second through fourth as Stickler (24.26), Emily Parsons (24.33) and Sarah Love (24.44) all scored points for the Spartans.

The MSU women also took second through fourth place again in the 100 butterfly as Love posted a time of 57.80, followed be Brown (58.18) and Marcella Kupraszewicz (58.63).

Setting a trend in the meet, MSU scored second through fourth-place points in the 200 freestyle as Srickler (1:52.24) placed second, Pugh (1:56.59) finished third and Jessica Wellick (2:00.27) hit the wall in fourth.

In the 200 medley relay, the team of Brooke Telander, Lacy, Love and Parsons posted a time of 1:45.79 to place second overall. The Spartans also recorded a runner-up finish in the 400 freestyle relay as the team of Strickler, Betsy Good, Parsons and Love swam a time of 3:31.44.

The Spartans will be back home next weekend as the women play host to Bowling Green on Friday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m.
