UCSB Gauchos Claim Pair of Wins Against UNLV

SANTA BARBARA, California, January 12. THE UC Santa Barbara Gauchos took down UNLV in a pair of dual meets on Saturday. The men picked up a 158-104 triumph, while the women topped UNLV, 148-114. Andrea Ward proved to be prolific with a trio of wins for the UCSB women.

The UCSB men’s and women’s swimming team defeated UNLV in a dual meet at Campus Pool on Saturday. The women won by a final of 148-114, while the men cruised to a 158-104 victory. On the women’s side, senior standout Andrea Ward won three individual events. For the men Andrew Barmann won both of his long distance events.

The meet began with a win for the women by the team of Allie Knight, Katie Records, Ward, and Sophia Yamauchi in the 200 yard medley relay (1:45.58). Ward followed her contribution in the relay with a victory in the 1000 yard freestyle at 10:19.48. Yamauchi won the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:04.87 with Records coming in second in 1:05.03.

Ward also took home victories in the women’s 100 and 200 yard butterfly in 55.03 and 2:03.02. Knight won the 200 yard backstroke in 2:03.42. Yamauchi and Records came in first and second in the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:17.05 and 2:20.73, respectively. Monica Garcia came in second in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:08.89. In the 200 yard individual medley, the women had the top four times. Records came in first with a time of 2:08.78. Heren Alanis and Knight followed with times of 2:09.11 and 2:10.16, respectively.

In the final event, the women’s 400 yard freestyle, the Gauchos A team of Meghan Bicomong, Kimmie Kreuzberger, Yamauchi, and Anne Peanansky came in second place in 3:28.65.

“You’re not going to win this meet with any one individual, this victory was a total team effort and I was very pleased with our swimmers against a high quality opponent in UNLV,” said head coach Gregg Wilson following his team’s dual sweep.

For the men, the meet began with a second place finish in the 200 yard medley relay led by Randy Aukhus, Andy Castilleja, Wade Allen, and Ryan Hanni. Barmann followed with a win in the 1000 yard freestyle in 9:26.02. Later in the day Barmann also won the 500 yard freestyle

Lucas Norman won the men’s 200 yard freestyle in 1:40.45. “Lucas Norman had one of the best meets he’s ever had,” said Wilson. Norman also came in second in the 100 yard freestyle in 46.00.

Mickey Mowry impressed in the 100 and 200 yard butterfly winning with times of 49.29 and 1:47.18. Hanni won the 100 yard freestyle in 45.16. Aukhus won the 200 yard backstroke in 1:51.26. Castilleja won the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:02.94.

The meet concluded with a Gaucho victory in the men’s 400 yard freestyle relay. Led by the team of Allen, Norman, Hanni, and Alex Campbell, the A team finished in 3:01.39.

Up next for the Gauchos is a dual at UC Davis for the women on January 24th. On January 25th, both men’s and women’s teams will head to the University of Pacific in Stockton, Calif. to compete in a dual meet.

In its first action of 2014, the UNLV men’s and women’s swimming team dropped a dual meet at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. The 23rd-ranked Rebel men were handed a 158-104 loss, while UNLV’s women lost by a score of 148-114.

In the men’s meet, UNLV would claim a total of five first place finishes, beginning with the day’s first event, the 200 medley relay. The team of Henrique Machado, David Szele, Dillon Virva and Tom Paco-Pedroni won the event with a time of 1:31.91.

Four Rebels all won individual events on the men’s side as well, starting with Machado in the 100 back, as he touched the wall in 50.54. Szele placed first in the 100 breast (56.26), Giacomo Gremizzi won the 200 IM (1:51.36), while Virva and Paco-Pedroni tied for first place in the 50 free, turning in a time of 20.93.

UNLV’s women won six events, led by Jessica Marsh’s double-win performance in the 200 free (1:52.94) and the 100 free (52.39). Other single event winners included: Rachel Dixon in the 100 back (57.17), Julia Fehervari in the 50 free (24.08), and Jessica Heim in the 500 free (5:05.38). The Rebels won the final event was well, with Fehervari, Heim, Dixon and Marsh teaming up for a first place time of 3:27.49 in the 400 free.

The Rebels will be in action next on Saturday, Jan. 25, as they host Air Force, Bakersfield and Denver in Buchanan Natatorium at 12 pm.
