Nebraska Sweeps All 16 Events Against Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa, December 14. THE University of Nebraska women’s swimming and diving team picked up wins in every one of the 16 events contested, cruising to a 195-105 win over Northern Iowa last night. Jacqueline Juffer, Kristin Strecker and Anna Filipcic each won two individual events to lead the Huskers.

The Nebraska swimming and diving team swept all 16 events on its way to a 195-105 victory over Northern Iowa on Friday afternoon. Twelve different Huskers won individual events, with two wins apiece coming from Jacqueline Juffer (50 and 100 back), Kristin Strecker (50 and 100 breast) and Anna Filipcic (one- and three-meter dives).

The Huskers began the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. Nebraska’s team of Megan Ziemann, Shannon Guy, Natalie Morris and Alexandra Bilunas finished in a time of 1:48.33. The Huskers’ other squad, comprised of Juffer, Strecker, Bria Deveaux and Rebekah Land, took second in 1:49.97.

In the meet’s first individual event, the 1,000-yard freestyle, Morgan Flannigan (10:27.91) and Julia Roller (10:42.73) finished first and second for the Huskers. Nebraska would later add a victory in the meet’s other long-distance freestyle event, the 500 free, when Bailey Pons finished in 5:10.59.

Juffer led the way for the Huskers in the backstroke events, winning the 50 back (27.22) and tying Ziemann for first in the 100 back (59.98). Juffer’s victories marked her third and fourth of the season, while Ziemann’s win was her first.

In the breaststroke events, Nebraska’s top performance came from Strecker. The senior won both the 50 breast (31.58) and 100 breast (1:07.81) for her first and second wins of the season.

Anna Filipcic stood out once again for the Huskers in the diving well. The Big Ten Diver of the Week won both the one- (278.70) and three-meter (303.40) dives for her seventh and eighth wins of the season.

Other Husker winners were Morris in the 200 free (1:56.42), Kelly Dunn in the 100 fly (59.63), Bilunas in the 50 free (24.30), Deveaux in the 100 free (53.62) and Guy in the 100 IM (59.56).

The Huskers concluded the meet with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The Husker squad of Oeltjen, Bilunas, Guy and Katie Ditter finished in a time of 1:39.84.

With the meet victory, the Huskers improved their overall record to 2-2-1 on the season. The squad will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 14, with a road dual at Nebraska-Omaha beginning at 2 p.m.

Following this weekend’s duals, the Huskers will have nearly three weeks before they take their annual holiday training trip. After that, the squad will next compete on Saturday, Jan. 25, when they host conference rival Illinois at 11 a.m. on senior day.

The University of Northern Iowa swimming & diving team played host to the Nebraska Cornhuskers Friday afternoon. Despite the 195-105 loss to the Cornhuskers the Panthers had some outstanding performances in the pool.

200 Yard Medley Relay Results

Natalie Johnson, Veronica Herrmann, Taylor Ostrowski and Mikki Freese captured a third place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:52.82.

1000 Yard Freestyle Results

In the 1000 yard freestyle Stephanie Jackson finished third. Jackson recorded a time of 10:53.49.

200 Yard Freestyle Results

Aftin Phyfe continued her solid season with a second place finish in the 200 yard freestyle. Phyfe finished her 200 free with a final time of 1:58.07. The Panthers took two of the top four places in the 200 yard freestyle.

50 Yard Breaststroke Results

Caryn Knight and Veronica Herrmann placed third and fourth respectively in the 50 yard breaststroke. Knight finished with a finals time of 32.08. Herrmann finished with a time of 32.40.

100 Yard Butterfly Results

Taylor Ostrowski finished third in the 100 yard butterfly with a final time of 1:00.78. Kayla McCormick finished in a close fourth to Ostrowski with a time of 1:00.83.

50 Yard Freestyle Results

Aftin Phyfe and Mikki Freese finished third and fourth respectively in the 50 yard freestyle. Freese finished with a time of 25.63. Phyfe finished her 50 freestyle in 25.50.

3 Meter Diving Results

Sarah Kemp finished fourth in the 3 meter dive. Kemp’s final score totaled 264.52.

100 Yard Freestyle Results

In the 100 yard freestyle the Panthers finished second through fifth. Aftin Phyfe, Ashley Nelson, Sierra Sachtjen and Elise Drewsen finished second through fifth respectively. Phyfe’s final time was 54.64.

100 Yard Backstroke Results

Natalie Johnson took third in the 100 yard backstroke. Johnson recorded a 1:01.68 finals time.

100 Yard Breaststroke Results

The Panthers had a strong showing in the 100 yard breaststroke, finishing second through fifth. Veronica Herrmann, Caryn Knight, Jill Georgen and Stephanie Paape finished second through fifth respectively. Herrmann, who finished second, recorded a finals time of 1:09.06.

500 Yard Freestyle Results

UNI had another second through fifth place finish in the 500 yard freestyle. Taylor Ostrowski, Reva Bork, Lindsey Phelps and Alesha Rettenmeier combined to finish second through fifth respectively. Ostrowksi, who finished second, had a finals time of 5:23.11.

50 Yard Butterfly Results

Kayla McCormick, Morgan Riley, Kathleen Varner and Stephanie Jackson placed second through fifth respectively. McCormick finished with a finals time of 27.73.

1 Meter Diving Results

Allie Bey, Ashlyn Clingman, Sarah Kemp and Katie Mason finished second, third, fourth and fifth in the 1 meter dive. Bey, who led the group of Panthers, tallied a total dive score of 240.90.

100 Yard IM Results

Continuing with the trend the Panthers finished second through fifth in the 100 yard IM. Caryn Knight, Taylor Ostrowski, Jill Georgen and Stephanie Jackson placed second through fifth respectively. Knight, who led all Panthers in the 100 yard IM finished in a time of 1:03.24.

200 Yard Freestyle Relay Results

The team of Aftin Phyfe, Elise Drewsen, Natalie Johnson and Mikki Freese placed second in the 200 yard freestyle. The team combined for a finals time of 1:40.54.

The Panthers will be back in action on January 11th when they travel to Normal, Illinois for a conference dual against the Redbirds of Illinois State.
