Miami-Ohio Women, Denison Men Take Top Honors At Miami Invitational

OXFORD, Ohio, December 8. THE Miami RedHawks closed out their home invitational in style last night, posting three individual wins and one relay win to top the field in the women’s meet, while the Denison men outpaced the field to take top honors on the men’s side.

Behind three individual wins and a relay win, Miami’s women’s swimming and diving team cruised to victory at the Miami Invitational in the Nixon Aquatic Center.

The RedHawks finished with 2,332 total points after three days of competitive swimming. They defeated Illinois (1,704.5 points), Denison (1,388 points), Emory (1,374.5 points), Cincinnati (856 points), Ball State (711 points), Wright State (454 points) and Urbana (97 points).

Miami’s three individual wins came courtesy of freshman Elise Campbell, sophomore Aubrey Kluth and sophomore Emma Szczupakiewicz.

Campbell won the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.35, out-touching Emory’s second-place finisher. Campbell also was a member of Miami’s third-place finishing 200 medley relay team including freshman Stephanie LeMire, senior Cynthia Donovan and sophomore Betsy Zilch (1:43.00). Campbell was also the anchor leg of Miami’s first-place finishing 400 freestyle relay team of Campbell, junior Annie Marquiss, Donovan and sophomore Sara Krueger. Their time was 3:23.57, only twelve hundredths of a second before Illinois’ top relay team touched with a time of 3:23.69.

Kluth was victorious in the 200 IM, earning 36 points for the RedHawks with a time of 2:03.89. She also earned 16 points in the 500 freestyle with a thirteenth-place finish (4:59.65).

Szczupakiewicz swam the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:00.64, which earned her a first-place finish. She also contributed 23 points with a ninth-place finish in the 100 butterfly (57.12).

Other notable finishes were turned in by LeMire, who finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:15.01.

Junior Stephanie Pearce also had a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:54.08.

The RedHawks have the rest of December off from competition and will return to action on Friday, Jan. 3, in Boca Raton, Florida against James Madison.

Miami’s men’s swimming and diving team finished in second following the third and final day of competition at the Miami Invitational in the Nixon Aquatic Center.

Denison won the invitational scoring 2,584.5 points. Miami earned 1,468 behind a great team effort. Wright State (1,297.5 points), Emory (1,293.5 points), Cincinnati (1,072.5 points) and Urbana (291 points) rounded out the competition.

On the final day of competition, sophomore Evan Bader, freshman Grant Stafford and junior Joe Baumgartner led the way for the RedHawks.

Bader finished in second-place, earning 30 points for Miami, in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:02.57. He was also a member of Miami’s 200 medley relay team with sophomore Heshan Unamboowe, Stafford and senior Dan Nemeth, that finished in fourth-place (1:31.83).

Stafford was a fifth-place finisher in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.75. His performance earned the RedHawks a key 27 points towards their team score. Baumgartner was a fifth-place finisher in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.61, in addition to his contributions to Miami’s fourth-place finishing 400 freestyle relay team with sophomore Chris Dieter, sophomore Jake Prodoehl and Nemeth (3:04.07).

Dieter also swam to an eighth-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:37.37). Prodoehl was a sixth-place finisher in the 200 backstroke (1:51.29), just ahead of teammates Sam Flessner (1:51.69) and Sean Neri (1:53.60) who finished seventh and ninth respectively.

The RedHawks have the rest of December off from competition and will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 9, in the Nixon Aquatic Center against Cincinnati.
