Kenyon Women’s Press Release

Saturday marked the final nine events of this year’s Total Performance Sports Camps Invitational, hosted by Kenyon College. Katie Kaestner earned her second win of the weekend, however the Ladies were forced to settle for second place after the conclusion of the three-day event at the James Steen Aquatic Center.

Kenyon finished the weekend with 2,012 total points through 39 events, good for second place in a field of seven invited teams. The University of Pennsylvania, an NCAA Division I team, won the team title with 2,412.5 points. The Ladies had a stronghold on second place and distanced themselves from third-place finisher Johns Hopkins University (1,376). Davidson College (943.5) finished in fourth place with Carnegie Mellon University (814.5), DePauw University (510), and Grove City College (494.5) rounding out the rest of the field.

The first event of the day was the women’s 200-yard medley relay, where the Ladies took three of the top eight spots, including second place by the Ladies’ top team. Rachel Flinn, Laura Duncan, Jourdan Cline, and Jenner McCleod finished just 0.29 seconds behind event winner Penn by completing the trek in 1:43.20. Kenyon also fielded teams that took seventh and eighth place, as well.

While the 200-yard medley relay team started the day strongly for the Ladies, Katie Kaestner reeled in Kenyon’s lone win on Saturday. The sophomore was the first to touch the wall in the 200-yard backstroke competition, doing so in 2:17.59. It was her second win of the weekend after she took gold in yesterday’s 100-yard breaststroke event.

Mariah Williamson also swam with an edge, propelling toward a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle event. Her performance timed out in 4:54.15, second only to Penn’s Shelby Fortin who set a new pool record at 4:51.21. Fortin previously held the record, which she set in 2009. Syd Lindblom (4:57.76) placed sixth in the same event, bettering her preliminary time by nearly five seconds, while Emma Stewart-Bates (5:07.17) placed ninth.

In the second relay event of the evening and the final competition of the weekend, Kenyon placed third in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The pairing of Cline, McLeod, Kaestner, and Haley Townsend teamed up for a 3:27.02 finish time.

The Ladies put forth additional top-five finishes, including Flinn in the 200 back (2:04.23), Cline in the 100 fly (56.12), Kaestner in the 200 IM (2:08.17), and Hannah Lobb (2:21.59) in the 200 breast.

Two pool records fell on the women’s side on Saturday. After the 500 free record fell earlier in the day, the 100 fly mark was reset by Rochelle Dong of Penn (53.74).

Kenyon will now have a lengthy break heading into their next meet in Sarasota, Florida. The Ladies will swim next on Jan. 7 at the Washington University quad meet to begin the back half of the schedule.

Kenyon Men’s Press Release

Some long-standing swimming records took a hit Saturday night in the final session of the three-day long Total Performance Sports Camps Invitational. One of those records was shattered by Kenyon College junior Harrison Curley, who helped the Lords maintain a second-place finish among some heavyweight competition from both NCAA Division I and III teams.

Kenyon wrapped up the Invitational with 2,326.83 points and finished runner up to the University of Pennsylvania Quakers, who claimed the 2013 title with 2,592 team points. Johns Hopkins University took third with 1,185.5 points, DePauw University was fourth with 734.83 points, and Davidson College was fifth with 553.5 points. Carnegie Mellon University and Grove City College rounded out the field in sixth and seventh place with respective point totals of 553.33 and 295.

A total of eight swimming events were contested Saturday night and five events ended in Steen Aquatic Center records. One of those pool records was set by Curley, who won the 200-yard backstroke in a blazing time 1:45.80. Not only was that a pool record, but also a Kenyon record. It replaced the old Kenyon mark of 1:47.21 set by Leandro Monteiro in the 2001-02 season.

Backing up Curley’s performance was freshman Trevor Manz, who put together a huge finish to the Invitational. Manz began Saturday night by swimming the breaststroke leg on the Lords’ second place 200-yard medley relay team which clocked in 1:30.07. He later took second place in the 200-yard breaststroke and second place in the 200-yard individual medley with times of 2:00.68 and 1:49.83. Finally, Manz swam with the Lords’ 400-yard freestyle relay team that placed fourth with a time of 3:04.08.

Right behind Manz in the 200-yard breaststroke was Alex Beckwith and Ian Reardon. Beckwith took fourth place in 2:01.84, while Reardon claimed fifth in 2:02.41. In the 200-yard individual medley, Reardon backed Manz’s runner-up finish with a swim of 1:52.95 that was good for fourth place.

Wes Manz, Trevor’s older brother, was also a part of the Lords’ 400-yard freestyle relay team and earlier went on his own to claim fourth place in the 100-yard freestyle, a race he completed in 45.86. He joined four other Lords who had top-five finishes Saturday. Those four included Joey Guilfoyle, Arthur Conover, Christian Josephson, and Ryan Funk. Guilfoyle and Conover finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle. Guilfoyle turned in a 4:30.53 and Funk a 4:30.81. Josephson was third in the 100-yard butterfly by clocking in at 49.40, while Funk placed fourth in the same event by posting a time of 49.47.

The Lords also got a big boost on the boards where Brandon Roman and Derek Hoare finished first and second in the one-meter diving competition. Roman piled up a total of 459.90 points, while Hoare checked out with a score of 444.15.

The four other pool records set Saturday night were all established by swimmers from the winning Pennsylvania Quakers squad.
