Auburn Welcomes Strong Contingent to Auburn Invitational

By Rebecca Noblett

AUBURN, Alabama, November 22. FOUR of the top NCAA Division I schools will face off this weekend when Alabama, Florida State, and Georgia travel to Auburn for the Auburn Invitational. The three-day meet promises fast times across the board, with all eight squads ranked in the top 25 in the latest NSCAA rankings.

On the women’s side, Georgia’s Amber McDermott will be the top-ranked swimmer in three events. McDermott holds the number one seed in the 1650 free (9:44.40), 400 IM (4:17.70), and 500 free (4:43.57). Teammate Hali Flickinger has the top times in both the 200 fly (1:57.25) and the 200 back (1:57.47).

Florida State’s Kaitlyn Dressel, older sister of Bolles standout Caeleb Dressel, boasts the top seed in the 100 free and the seventh-fastest time in the country this year at 49.50. In the 50 free, Dressel (22.86) ranks just behind Georgia’s Chantal van Landeghem, who posted a 22.80 against Wisconsin earlier this season.

For the men, Georgia’s Chase Kalisz leads the field- and the rest of the country- with his 1:45.23 seed in the 200 IM. Kalisz also holds the top seed in the 400 IM (3:48.34) and will compete unseeded in the 50 free, 100 fly, and 100 breast.

Several other men claim top seeds in multiple events. Florida State’s Pavel Sankovich holds the top seed in both the 100 fly (47.76) and the 100 back (48.18). Georgia’s Matias Koski leads the way in the 200 free (1:36.16) and the 500 free (4:22.50). Auburn’s Marcelo Chierighini boasts the top time in both sprint freestyle events- 19.93 in the 50 and 44.09 in the 100.

The top battles on the men’s side look to be in the breaststroke events. Alabama’s Anton McKee holds the top seed in both events with a 1:57.98 in the 200 and a 54.67 in the 100. However, he will face tough competition from Georgia’s Nic Fink in both events. The two feature in the top 10 times in the country this year in both distances and will be chasing the top times Purdue’s Lyam Dias set last weekend at the Minnesota Grand Prix.

Full psych sheets are available on Auburn’s website, and Auburn’s All Access will offer a free live stream of the meet all three days.
