Interdivisional Matchup Features DI Western Illinois Splitting With DII Truman State

MACOMB, Illinois, November 3. LAST night, NCAA Division II Truman State ventured to Macomb, Ill., to take on NCAA Division I Western Illinois. The Truman State women put on a show with a 189-95 victory, while the Leathernecks of Western Illinois topped Truman’s men, 214-77.

MACOMB, Ill. – – The 8th-ranked Truman women’s swimming team notched a key dual victory on Saturday afternoon, blasting NCAA Div. I Western Illinois 189-85 behind 12 first-place finishes. Meanwhile, the Bulldog men fell 214-77 to WIU.

Casey Jepsen was perfect on the afternoon to lead the Bulldog women, being part of two first-place relay squads (400 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay) to go with two first-place individual swims in the 50 Free and the 200 Free. Abby Hempen (400 Medley Relay, 100 Breast, 500 Free) and Evyn Spencer (400 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay, 200 Back) picked up three first-place finishes, while Ally Neumann picked up a pair of first-place touches (200 Breast, 400 IM).

Beth Eyanson (400 Medley Relay), Brynn Guardado (1000 Free), Emily Ponte (100 Free), Shannon Rempe (100 Fly), Alison Strickler (400 Free Relay), and Bailey Peterson (400 Free Relay) all picked up one first-place finish on the afternoon, as Truman dominated from start to finish against the Div. I squad.

Justin Marler swam two second-place races for the Bulldog men, finishing just out of first in both the 100 Back and the 200 Back.

Both Bulldog teams will now prepare for the TYR Cup – a three-day event hosted by Big Ten program Northwestern (Ill.). That event will take place in Evanston, Ill., from Nov. 22-24.

Fighting Leatherneck swimming & diving split a dual meet against Truman State on Saturday (Nov. 2) at Brophy Pool in Macomb. The Leatherneck men defeated the Bulldogs, 214-77, while women fell, 189-85.
“Our meet went very well against Truman State. I had noticed that our team was practicing very well over the course of the week, and I was expecting them to swim very fast today,” head coach Greg Naumann said. “The team did not disappoint me at all. Our men’s team managed to win every event. Our women’s team did have a couple of key wins, which is often hard to come by when we compete against Truman State.”

The Leatherneck men won 12 individual races, two relays and both diving events. Matt Abercrombie claimed the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.62, and the 400-IM with a time of 4:14.41.

Deven Ries was victorious in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:14.89 and the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:55.90.

Chris Neaveill won the 100-yard backstroke after touching the wall in 54.13 seconds. JD Furr claimed the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.17. Tyler Neaveill edged out teammates Austin Payne (22.67) and Jonathan Bond (22.82) in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.32.

The relay team of Bond, Furr, Chris and Tyler Neaveill won the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:35.02, while the Neaveill brothers teamed up with Payne and Dylon Rykosky to win the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:16.34.

On the diving board, Doug Ogilive won the 1-meter dive with a score of 248.18, while Viktor Rusenas was victorious in the 3-meter dive after posting a 207.30.

On the women’s side, Lizzie Hollopeter was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke after finishing with a time of 1:02.14. Kelsey Kirchhoefer claimed the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:20.36

Julia Rassmussen won the 1-meter dive for the Western women with a score of 201.15.

“The majority of our team is swimming faster than where they were at last year, which is a great sign of things to come for conference this year,” added Naumann. “They continue to work hard in practice, and it is definitely showing. I’m very excited to see what another two weeks of training will do as we look forward to Valparaiso.”

Western will host the Crusaders of Valparaiso on Saturday, November 16. The dual meet will take place at the Brophy Hall Pool.
