Army Sweeps Massachusetts in Saturday Dual Meet

WEST POINT, New York, October 19. AFTER splitting their dual meet against UMass last season, the Army women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams both came out with victories this time around, as the women won by a score of 163-137 and the men triumphed 197-97 on Saturday. It marked the first time in the two teams’ history that the Army women have come out ahead in a head-to-head matchup.

The Army swimming and diving team swept Massachusetts in a non-conference dual meet on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Crandall Pool. In a turn of events, the Black Knights overcame previous season losses from UMass and Boston University to open their 2013-14 season. The Army men captured a victory with a 197-97 decision to the Minutemen, while the Black Knight women captured their first win over the Minutewomen in a 163-137, since the 2005-06 start of the series.

“I am very proud of our performance, we swam very well today,” said head coach Mickey Wender. “We have improved across all boards in our performance from two weeks ago. You cannot say enough good things about our wins today, they were solid from start to finish and our depth was what carried us through which gave us the victory. We had great leadership from our upperclassmen and our freshman were able to capture a multitude of first-place wins. I think we are in a very good place right now.”

The Massachusetts men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams were both defeated on the road by Army Saturday.

The Minutewomen (1-1) fell by a score of 163-137 while the Minutemen (0-2) were defeated 197-97.

The women had a number of strong performances, including high point totals from freshman Meriza Werenski (South Hadley, Mass.), junior Katie Arnott (Suffern, N.Y.) and senior diver Michaela Butler (Dennisport, Mass.).

Werenski won gold in the 500 free, 1000 free and 200 individual medley, in addition to being on the second-place 200 medley relay team. The high school all-American now has five wins in six individual races this season.

Butler opened the day with wins in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Her score of 320.63 in the 3-meter set a Crandall Pool record. Additionally, Rachel Dushman (Bedford, Mass.) and Mikhalia Eckhardt (Windsor, Colo.) completed the UMass sweep in the low board, while Dushman and Julia Jagannath (Camp Hill, Pa.) duplicated the sweep on the high board.

Arnott won both breaststroke races, touching the wall in the 100 in 1:06.65 and in the 200 in 2:24.65.

Junior Zoe Judd (Acton, Mass) won the 100 free in 52.58 and nearly added the 200 before finishing just 14-hundredths behind first.

On the men’s side, the Black Knights won 12 of the 14 races in the pool. The Minutemen won first place point totals in the 200 IM and 400 free relay.

UMass sophomore Josh Koppel (Latham, N.Y.) scored 18 points with first-place performances in sweeping the diving events. Freshman Nolan Burns (Fall River, Mass.) finished third in the 1-meter in his first college competition.

Junior Michael Glenn (Overland Park, Kan.) turned in a group of nice swims as he took second in the 1000 free and 100 breast, and third in the 200 breast.

Sophomore Brian Stiles (Denville, N.J.) capped off the meet as he anchored the gold-medal winning 400 free relay with a 100 time of 46.31 – the fastest split time among the 28 relay participants.

UMass will return home to play host to Binghamton Friday, Nov. 1-Saturday Nov. 2 at the Joseph Rogers, Jr. Pool in Boyden Gym. Friday’s portion will begin with diving at 5 p.m., followed by swimming at 6 p.m. Saturday will have diving beginning at 10 a.m. and racing at Noon.
