Multiple Event Winners Key Florida Southern Mocs Sweep of Tampa

LAKELAND, Florida, October 18. FLORIDA Southern captured a pair of victories over in-state rivals Tampa as the men captured a 137.5-124.5 win and the women scored a 154-108 triumph in the first dual meet of the season.

Luis Rojas led the Mocs on the men’s side with a strong title trifecta. He won the 200-yard free with an NCAA B cut of 1:40.96, while also winning the 200 back in 1:52.08 and the 200 IM in 1:54.94. He absolutely dominated the IM with a nearly five-second victory ahead of teammate Alec Wathen.

Juan Tolosa also scored big points for Florida Southern with a distance sweep. He first crushed the field in the 1000 free with a 9:32.10 before being part of a huge dual meet point-scoring swing in the 500 free with a 4:39.17 as the Mocs went 1-2-3-4 in the middle distance event to come from behind for the win.

Allan Gutierrez also popped an NCAA B cut for FSU with a 50.38 in the 100 fly, while Raul Garrastazu topped the 200 fly in 1:54.06 for the Mocs.

The Spartans, meanwhile, put up a significant fight. The squad swept the relays as Karl Burdis, Philip Nordenberg, Runar Borgen and Khalid Aldaboos topped the 200 medley relay in 1:33.09, then closed out the night with Aldaboos, Borgen, Jordan Augier and Martin Hammer winning the 200 free relay in 1:23.56.

Tampa had five other individual wins. Burdis won the 100 back in 50.33, while Nordenberg touched first in the 100 breast in 59.95. Aldaboos clinched the 50 free in 21.06, while Hammer posted a 46.66 in the 100 free. Danny Duhig then won the 200 breast in 2:13.73.

Kelsey Gouge keyed the victory for the Florida Southern women as she captured three straight wins during the dual meet. After helping Lauren Reynolds, Alex Ballard and Cassie Ley to a 200 medley relay as the third leg with a 1:48.48 final tally, Gouge ripped off wins in the 100 breast (1:05.91), 50 free (23.93) and 100 free (52.14) in an incredible run of wins.

Alli Crenshaw also snared a trio of wins, taking home the 1000 free (10:26.18), 200 free (1:54.16) and 500 free (5:10.20) throughout the night. Other Mocs with wins were Lauren Reynolds in the 100 back (1:00.26) and 200 back (2:07.65) as well as Morgan Burns taking home the 200 breast in 2:28.16. Burns also doubled with a 2:12.75 in the 200 IM.

Tampa broke into the win column in the women’s meet as well. Jesse North topped the 200 fly in 2:08.40, while Catherine Parker won the 100 fly in 58.68. Tampa closed out the night with a win in the 200 free relay with a 1:38.50 from Erin Plachy, Marisa Barton, Emily Grams and Heather Glenday.
