Melanie Margalis, Chase Kalisz Move Up Collegiate Ranks in Dual Meet Wins Over LSU

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana, October 18. LOUISIANA State couldn’t have asked for a tougher opponent to start the dual meet season than Georgia. The Tigers were no match for the reigning women’s NCAA champion or the equally-impressive men’s team, losing the women’s meet 170.5-118.5 and the men’s meet 180-112.

Georgia sophomore Chase Kalisz, in his preparation for competition at the Duel in the Pool in about two months, posted a swift 200 breast today to put himself at the top of the collegiate rankings. His time of 1:57.97 just barely beat out the 1:57.98 that Anton McKee of Alabama posted last week. Kalisz is a solid 200 breaststroker with the likelihood of challenging for a top-three finish at the NCAA championships. His breaststroke prowess is part of the reason why he was able to pull off a silver medal in the 400 IM at the world championships. Nic Fink, also prepping for the Duel in the Pool, posted a 1:59.42, his first time under two minutes this season. Kalisz also won the 200 fly with a 1:45.48, now third in the collegiate ranks after Marcin Cieslak’s 1:45.03 and Dominick Glavich’s 1:45.41.

Fink was able to notch a victory of his own today, winning the 100 breast with a 55.07.

Melanie Margalis swept the backstroke events with a 54.66 in the 100 back and 1:56.05 in the 200. Margalis now stands at the top of the collegiate ranks with her 200 back swim, bumping down Elizabeth Beisel’s 1:56.96 from three weeks ago.

Tynan Stewart gave the Bulldogs three wins today, taking the 100 back in 49.27, the 200 back in 1:45.85 and the 400 IM in 3:52.16. The 400 IM, which was swum as an exhibition race, stands as a top-five swim, while his 200 back puts him fourth in the nation.

Three other Georgia swimmers also posted double wins in individual events today. Olympians Shannon Vreeland and Matias Koski each won the 100 and 200 freestyles, with Vreeland taking the 100 in 50.56 and the 200 with a 1:47.60. Koski, showing himself to be a versatile utility player for Georgia, posted a 45.03 in the 100 free and 1:38.20 in the 200. He also placed second in the 100 fly with a 49.70 to teammate Doug Reynold’s 48.90.

Annie Zhu took both breaststroke events with times of 1:02.83 in the 100 and 2:13.44 in the 200.

LSU was able to notch three victories today. With Georgia swimming exhibition in the men’s 400 IM, Brandon Goldman took the first-place points for the Tigers with a 4:06.86. Kara Kopsco won the 200 fly with a 1:59.06, and Sophie Weber won the women’ 400 IM with a 4:24.31.
