NCAA Championship Preview in Several Events at Indiana-Stanford Dual Meet

PALO ALTO, California, October 12. THE second part of a two-day Bay area tour gave the Indiana Hoosiers a second dual-meet loss, this time against the Stanford Cardinal with a score of 183-111.

A few events featured athletes who could face each other in championship finals next March at the NCAA championships, including backstrokers David Nolan of Stanford and Eric Ress of Indiana. Nolan is the reigning NCAA champion in the 100 back, the event in which Ress placed third. Today, Nolan won the 100 back with a 48.32 to Ress’ 48.80. Ress would exact revenge in the 200 back with a winning time of 1:45.93 over Nolan’s 1:46.99. The key to Ress’ win in the 200 was a better third 50 yards: 26.68 to Nolan’s 27.56.

Nolan’s best 100 back of the day came in leading off Stanford’s winning 400 medley relay. Nolan’s 48.25 led Stanford to post a 3:17.02 in the relay, and put Nolan fourth in the collegiate rankings, where Ryan Murphy leads with a 47.43.

Olympic medalist and Stanford’s diving NCAA champion Kristian Ipsen had a close battle with Indiana’s Darian Schmidt on the springboard today. Ipsen, who specializes in the 3-meter springboard event, won the 1-meter event over Schmidt, 358.05 to 357.60. Schmidt pulled off a minor upset over Ipsen on the 3-meter boards, winning with 383.78 points to Ipsen’s 376.80.

Besides the wins by Ress and Schmidt, Indiana won two other events today. Cody Miller, an NCAA All-American, won the 100 breast with a 56.57 over Stanford’s Mason Shaw’s 56.69. Junior Mike Hurley was able to defeat teammate and NCAA finalist Steven Schmuhl in the 400 IM, 4:00.77 to 4:02.20.

Connor Black, the former national public high school record holder in the 100 fly, posted a win in the event with a 48.22 over teammate Tom Kremer’s 49.33. Black also won the 50 free with a 20.31. Kremer, a multiple NCAA finalist in his freshman year, won the 200 fly today with a 1:48.69 over Gray Umbach’s 1:48.77.

Like Black, Justin Buck was a double winner today, taking the 1650 free in 15:17.37 and the 500 free with a 4:29.44.
