Pavel Sankovich, Anton McKee Swim Fast in Alabama-Florida State Dual Meet

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama, October 12. A day after trouncing Tulane and West Florida in a tri-meet in Pensacola, the Florida State Seminoles traveled across state lines to race Alabama in a dual meet. The women from Alabama were able to beat the Seminoles 167-133, while the men lost to Florida State 179-121.

Pavel Sankovich, a consolation finalist for Florida State at the 2013 NCAA championships in the 200 IM, won that event today with a 1:50.28. Sankovich has been slightly faster this season with a 1:49.77 from the All-Florida Invite two weeks ago. Sankovich is also a 2012 Olympian in the 100 backstroke, and he won that event today with a 48.75. He’s currently third in the nation with a 48.13 from the All-Florida Invite.

Kaylin Burchell was the meet’s only triple winner, taking the 100 breast (1:01.82), 200 breast (2:15.70) and 200 IM (2:03.77). Madison Jacobi of Florida State was able to beat Australian open water star and Alabama freshman Bonnie Macdonald in the distance events today, winning the 1650 free with a 16:38.01 to MacDonald’s 16:40.62. Later, in the 500 free, Jacobi posted a 4:54.66 to win the race ahead of MacDonald’s 4:55.11.

Tiffany Oliver of Florida State posted two wins in the sprint freestyles, taking the 50 free with a 23.10 and 100 free with a 50.53. Alabama’s Stephanie Kinsey also posted a double win, taking the 100 back (55.60) and 200 back (2:03.06).

Anton McKee, an Alabama freshman from Iceland, took both breaststroke events in the men’s meet, winning the 100 with a 54.67 and the 200 in 1:57.98. McKee’s time makes him the only swimmer under two minutes so far in the 200 breast so far this season. Matt Elliott previously had the top collegiate time this season with a 2:00.28 from the All-Florida Invitational.

Brian Westlake of Alabama won both distance freestyle events with a 15:45.61 in the mile and 4:28.68 in the 500 free.
