Utah Upends Oregon State in Corvallis

CORVALLIS, Oregon, October 11. UTAH won 10 of 14 events en route to a convincing 165-95 win over the Oregon State Beavers on Friday night in Corvallis.

The Utes opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, as Traycie Swartz, Nicole Ligeza, Petra Soininen and Giuliana Gigliotti cruised to the win in 1:45.11. The Utah B squad grabbed an additional four points with a second-place finish in 1:47.66.

Oregon State’s Sammy Harrison countered with a win in the 1,000 free, as she hit the wall in 10:04.58, nearly ten seconds ahead of Utah’s Sami Zuch (10:14.17) and Kylie Boyce (10:51.34). Harrison then pulled a quick double, winning the 200 free one event later in 1:51.49. Utah’s Selin Ozturk took second in 1:54.02, just ahead of teammate Amanda Barrett (1:54.10).

Utah then swept the next six events of the meet. In the 100 back, Utah’s Traycie Swartz touched first in 56.42, ahead of Oregon State’s Amani Amr (57.35) and Utah’s Ashlyn Karosas (58.71). Stina Colleou (100 breast, 1:04.38) and Petra Soininen (200 fly, 2:03.22, and 100 fly, 56.20) also picked up wins.

Ute Giuliana Gigliotti outsprinted the competition in the 50 free, hitting the wall in 24.25. She just missed adding another victory, as she finished second to teammate Swartz in the 100 free. Swartz won in 52.02, ahead of Gigliotti’s 52.41. Amanda Barrett won the 200 back in 2:02.74, and later added a second individual win in the 400 IM (4:28.28). Stina Colleou earned her second win of the meet in the 200 breast in 2:17.82.

Oregon State captured the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.02, as Utah entered its relays as exhibition.
