Saginaw Valley State Hires Bruce Zimmerman as First Head Coach

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Michigan, October 9. EARLIER this week, Saginaw Valley State University announced Bruce Zimmerman as its first head swimming coach in the history of its program. The women’s team is set to open up competition next fall with a men’s team commencing in 2015.

Previously, Zimmerman served as the head coach and aquatics director at the College of Charleston since 1999. During his 14 years there, he won five conference championships, and had three swimmers make the NCAA Division I Championships.

“When we began this important search, we knew exactly what we wanted in our initial head coach of the swimming & diving program,” SVSU Athletics Director Mike Watson said. “Not only does Coach Zimmerman bring a long history of success in the sport, he directly reflects what our athletic department stands for and represents. He will be a great addition to our Athletic Department Family.”

Prior to his decade-and-a-half at Charleston, Zimmerman had served as an assistant coach with Indiana University.

“I am very honored to be selected as the first-ever Head Swimming & Diving Coach at Saginaw Valley State University,” Zimmerman said. “I am looking forward to getting started right away to develop a highly-competitive program that will succeed at the highest levels, both in the conference and nationally. The resources are in place here at SVSU, both facility-wise and financially, to aide in developing a top-tier Division II program. I am excited to ‘dive-in’ head-first!”
